KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee's 2023-24 indoor track & field campaign carries on with a pair of meets on the docket for Jan. 26-27. The Big Orange distance squad heads to Boston University for the John Thomas Terrier Classic, while UT's sprinters, hurdlers, pole vaulters and jumpers will travel to Clemson, South Carolina, for the Bob Pollock Invitational.
The John Thomas Terrier Classic begins Friday at approximately 11:02 a.m. with Michael Rodriguez-King running the men's 800-meter and concludes Saturday at 5:40 p.m. with Rachel Sutliff competing in the women's 3,000-meter. Yaseen Abdalla and Brandon Olden are both set to make their season debuts at the meet, running the 3k and looking to improve on their sub-8 minute personal bests from the same meet one year prior. Abdalla's 7:42.23 from Jan. 2023 is the No. 11 performance in collegiate history.
The Terrier Classic will be streamed live both days on FloTrack, and live results will be provided by Lancer Timing.
Tennessee will travel 27 athletes to the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex for the Bob Pollock Invitational, totaling 42 entries at the meet. The Lady Vol pole vaulters and long jumpers will kick off the competition Friday at 11 a.m., and the weekend will wrap up with nine Vols running the men's 200-meter dash on Saturday at 1:45 p.m.
The Bob Pollock Invitational will be streamed live via ACC Network Extra, available online at espn.com/watch or the ESPN app. Live results will be provided by Flash Results.
LADY VOLS IN THE TOP 10: In the USTFCCCA's initial release of its Track & Field Rating Index (TFRI), the Lady Vols checked in at No. 6 in the nation after a strong start to the 2023-24 indoor season. Totaling 94.76 points in the poll, UT received large contributions from its top women's sprinters—headlined by Lady Vol senior Jacious Sears who holds the collegiate leading marks in the 60-meter (7.10) and 200-meter (22.88) this year.
Dennisha Page's 7.23 mark in the 60-meter, Layla Anderson's 8.06 in the 60-meter hurdles, Javonya Valcourt's 53.03 in the 400-meter and the 4x400-meter relay squad's season-best time of 3:33.89 also played a large role in the team's No. 6 national ranking. The full breakdown can be viewed at USTFCCCA.org.
FIRST TIME IN ORANGE: Three men's squad members will make their Tennessee track debuts this weekend. Graduate transfer Brandon Olden will suit up for the 3k at Boston University, while redshirt freshman Brock Moore (60-meter hurdles) and freshman Kyler Nichols (pole vault) are set for their first collegiate action at Clemson.
Additionally, sixth-year senior and 2021 SEC 60-meter champion Joella Lloyd will make her season debut at the Bob Pollock Invite, and sophomore Kylah Buckle will compete in her first career indoor 400-meter.
LAST TIME OUT: On Saturday, Jan. 20, Tennessee's squad showed promise as it posted 11 top-three finishes at Texas A&M's Ted Nelson Invitational and logged six marks that landed on the program's all-time top 10 lists. The Big Orange also sent a contingent of distance runners and pole vaulters to Nashville for the Vanderbilt Invitational, where UT logged nine top-five placements and 11 personal-best marks.
RUNNER OF THE WEEK: The Southeastern Conference office announced Tuesday afternoon that fifth-year senior sprinter Emmanuel Bynum was selected as Co-SEC Men's Runner of the Week after his performance at the Ted Nelson Invitational.
One week after tying his school record in the 300-meter, Bynum saw action in his first 400-meter dash of the year at Texas A&M. The Memphis native posted an SEC-leading time of 46.05, which ranks second in the NCAA this season and No. 4 on the World Athletics top list for 2024.
UP NEXT: The track & field squad will split up again next weekend, sending athletes to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic and to Columbia, South Carolina, for the South Carolina Invite. Both meets run Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3.
