KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the fourth consecutive week, the University of Tennessee men's basketball team is in the top eight of both major polls.
Tennessee (12-4, 2-1 SEC) places sixth in this week's Associated Press Top 25 Poll and seventh in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, as announced Monday afternoon.
The Volunteers have now been included 49 straight AP Poll releases, 12 more than the prior program best, and have claimed a top-10 spot in 22 of those weeks. The 49-week streak is the third-longest active mark in the country, behind only Houston (75) and Kansas (54), with Arizona (47) the lone other team at 40-plus.
Last week, Tennessee split a pair of SEC road games. First, it came back from a 15-point deficit Wednesday at Mississippi State to thrice tie the score before dropping a 77-72 decision despite 28 points from fifth-year guard Dalton Knecht and a career-high 26 from junior guard Zakai Zeigler.
Saturday, the Volunteers stormed back from an 11-point deficit with fewer than six-and-a-half minutes left at Georgia to register an 85-79 victory. Tennessee, behind 36 points from Knecht, closed the contest on a 21-4 run over the final 6:08.
Ninth-year head coach Rick Barnes' team recorded 1,147 points in the AP balloting this week and received 574 in the Coaches Poll voting, just 16 shy of sixth-place Duke.
As has been the case nearly all season, Tennessee is again the highest-ranked team in the SEC. It is joined in the top 25 by No. 8/10 Kentucky, No. 13/11 Auburn and No. 22/21 Ole Miss. In addition, Alabama received votes in both polls, while Mississippi State and South Carolina earned points in the AP Poll and Florida did so in the Coaches Poll.
Tennessee continues SEC competition Tuesday at 7 p.m. versus Florida at Food City Center, live on ESPN.
