SEC Announces Mashack, Key As Leadership Council Officers
September 21, 2023 | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
After it was revealed last week that Tamari Key and Jahmai Mashack would each represent Tennessee once again on the SEC Women's and Men's Basketball Leadership Councils, the two have been designated as officers by their peers, the Southeastern Conference announced on Thursday.
Â
Key was chosen as the chair of the SEC Women's Basketball Leadership Council, while Mashack was selected to serve as the vice chair for the men's group following recent meetings at the SEC offices in Birmingham.
Â
A redshirt senior, Key previously served as vice chair of the council. She also has served as vice chair of the SEC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and attended 2023 SEC Spring Meetings to offer input on issues that impact the college experience. The native of Cary, N.C., is a four-year member of the SEC Leadership Council.
Â
Mashack, a junior from Fontana, Calif., is in his second year as a member of the men's council. The junior also has represented the SEC on the NCAA Men's Basketball Oversight Committee's (MBOC) Student-Athlete Engagement Group.
Â
Texas A&M's Henry Coleman III will chair the SEC Men's Basketball Leadership Council, while South Carolina's Bree Hall will fill the vice chair role on the women's committee.
Â
The SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Councils provide an opportunity for SEC student-athletes to engage with campus leaders and conference office staff. Leadership Councils for football and men's and women's basketball, along with SAAC, provide a conduit of communication to the conference office on issues related to student-athlete experience, student-athlete wellness and playing rules.
Â
Entering his third season with the Vols, Mashack earned a reputation as one of the SEC's best perimeter defenders a season ago, leading UT in steals nine times as a sophomore. He appeared in all 36 games for Tennessee last season, averaging career highs in points (4.7), rebounds (2.4), assists (1.5) and steals (1.4) per game.
Â
He started all three of Tennessee's NCAA Tournament games in 2023, shooting .500 from the field (7 for 14)
Â
In July, Mashack took part in a service and cultural immersion trip to the Philippines as part of UT's VOLeaders Academy.
Â
Key returns to action after her 2022-23 season ended nine games in due to blood clots discovered in her lungs. She is a two-time SEC All-Defensive Team member, 2021-22 All-SEC Second Team honoree and 2021-22 Lisa Leslie Award top-five finalist.
Â
Two years ago, Key started 34 contests, averaging career bests in points (10.5), rebounds (8.1) and blocked shots (3.5) per game, rewriting UT records for season (119) and career blocks (295) and becoming the first Lady Vol to produce two career triple-doubles.
Â
A 2020-21 member of the VOLeaders Academy, Key traveled to Belize on a service trip with that Tennessee Athletics leadership cohort between her sophomore and junior seasons. She also was named to the 2021-22 SEC Women's Basketball Community Service Team.
