Women's Golf Central: Mary Fossum Invitational
September 15, 2023 | Women's Golf
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Tennessee women's golf is back on the road this weekend, traveling to East Lansing, Michigan, to compete in the 37th annual Mary Fossum Invitational this Sunday, Sept. 17, and Monday, Sept. 18.
Hosted by Michigan State University at Forest Akers – West Course, the two-day, 54-hole tournament will feature two rounds on Sunday and a final round on Monday. The Mary Fossum Invitational, which began in 1978, is held annually at Michigan State's Forest Akers West Golf Course in September.
It is a quick turnaround for the Lady Vols, who wrapped up play at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, South Carolina, on Tuesday afternoon. They shot 1-over to finish 10th, and senior Vanessa Gilly notched a top-ten finish with a 54-hole score of 8-under. Head Coach Diana Cantú makes one change to her starting lineup; Bailey Davis will also be competing individually in East Lansing.
LADY VOLS LINEUP
Gilly kicked off her senior season in incredible fashion, recording a career best 8-under at 54 holes at the Cougar Classic. Her ninth-place finish was the fourth time in her Tennessee career that she has finished top ten in a tournament. Going back to last season's NCAA regionals, she has shot a combined 13-under in her last two collegiate tournaments.
Fellow senior Kayla Holden also had a solid showing in the inaugural tournament, logging a 54-hole score of 3-over. Her first-round score of 70 was the 12th par or better she has recorded as a Lady Vol, followed by a 71 and 72 in the subsequent rounds.
Patterson will tee off third for the Lady Vols after recording a 219 in Charleston earlier this week. She shot a 70 in the first round of her sophomore campaign, the fourth-lowest score of her young career.
The Surrey, British Columbia, native will make her first appearance of the season in the Lady Vols' lineup this weekend. In her freshman season, she played 18 rounds of golf and recorded 8 scores of par or lower, the fourth-best figure on the team in 2022-23.
Chotikabhukkana gets the nod again after a 54-hole score of 223 at the Cougar Classic. She carded a bogey-free round two – spanning two days due to a weather delay – in Charleston; her score of 67 was the fourth-lowest score any participant recorded in round two.
Competing individually, Davis will be looking to build upon her score of 223 obtained in Charleston. The junior logged her 14th career par in round two earlier this week, notching an even score of 71 thanks to five birdies.
