Maui Invitational Relocates to Honolulu Amid Wildfire Recovery Efforts
September 15, 2023 | Men's Basketball
Due to the devastating wildfires that impacted the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui, the 2023 Maui Invitational will relocate to Honolulu on the island of Oʻahu.
This year's running of the event—often considered the preeminent early season college basketball tournament—will shift to the island of Oʻahu while its traditional home court—the Lahaina Civic Center—continues to serve as a critical hub for Maui wildfire recovery efforts.
The 2023 Tournament will take place at the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa from Nov. 20-22.
The eight-team field includes five teams in ESPN's way-too-early top-25 poll released earlier this month—No. 1 Kansas, No. 3 Purdue, No. 7 Gonzaga, No. 8 Tennessee and 10th-ranked Marquette.
All previously purchased tickets will be honored and located in similar seats in the Stan Sheriff Center.
Additional tickets will go on sale in early October at mauiinvitational.com. Fans who have previously purchased Tournament travel packages will be offered comparable travel packages with beach hotels in Honolulu. More details about the on-site experience, including event parking, will be provided in the coming weeks.
The Vols are set to face Syracuse on the tournament's opening day, Monday, Nov. 20.
On Aug. 30, Tennessee announced a charity exhibition game against Michigan State in East Lansing on Sunday, Oct. 29 to benefit Maui wildfire relief efforts.
All proceeds from that game will be donated to the Hawai'i Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund, providing financial resources to the relief efforts from the devastating Maui wildfires.
Further details, including ticket information and tipoff time for that exhibition game, will be announced at a later date.
The Volunteers—who are one of eight teams in this year's Maui Invitational field—have played in the event three times, competing at Lahaina Civic Center in 2004, 2011 and 2016. Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes has taken his teams to Maui five times previously, including that 2016 trip with the Vols.
The Maui Invitational launched the Hoops for 'Ohana online auction last week in partnership with Hawai'i Community Foundation's Maui Strong Fund. All the proceeds will go directly to wildfire relief and recovery efforts. Fans can bid on unique items donated by past Maui Invitational basketball programs and Tournament partners.
