Fingall Tabbed to Preseason All-SEC Team by League Coaches

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With the 2023 season just more than a month out, Tennessee volleyball's Morgahn Fingall was named to the 2023 Preseason Volleyball All-SEC Team by league coaches, the conference announced Wednesday.

Fingall, who earned All-America recognition from AVCA and VolleyballMag.com last year, finished the 2022 season with career highs in kills (483) and kills per set (4.39)–both marking the second-most in Tennessee history during the 25-point rally-scoring era. She was the SEC leader in the kills per set and points per set (5.10), while finishing second in kills and total points (561).

One of the most efficient attackers in all of Division I, Fingall finished inside the top 30 nationally in points per set (12th), kills per set (17th), total points (19th) and kills (27th) despite ranking 91st in the nation in total attacks. Throughout the season, she posted double-digit kills in 26 matches, including eight outings with 20-plus kills and three efforts with 25 or more kills.

Additionally, the Fairfax, Virginia, native was tabbed to the 2022 All-SEC Team and earned the league's Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, becoming just the second player in program history to win the award. During the year, Fingall earned AVCA National Player of the Week honors on Sept. 13 and was named SEC Player of the Week three times, while picking up SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors four times.

On Nov. 5 against LSU, Fingall eclipsed the 1,000-kill milestone for her career. In doing so, she became the 23rd player in program history to reach the mark and just the 10th to do so in the rally-scoring era. Two weeks later, she notched a personal-best 29 kills in UT's win against Mississippi State. Throughout the season, she broke or matched the Tennessee records during in the 25-point rally-scoring era by number of sets played: three (23 vs. Alabama), four (27 vs. LSU) and five (29 vs. Mississippi State).

Fingall leads a Tennessee team that enters the 2023 campaign with a lot of excitement and momentum. The Lady Vols, who were voted to finish third in the league this year, received one first-place nod during the preseason coaches poll.

Overall, UT returns its top four attackers from a year ago, with Fingall (483), Erykah Lovett (379), Keondreya Granberry (149) and Jasmine Brooks (133) accounting for 74 percent of the Lady Vols' total kills. On the defensive side, the Big Orange brings back three of its top four blockers in Granberry (103), Fingall (75) and Klaudia Pawlik (67).

Tennessee added plenty of new faces and talent to the roster as well, bringing in nine student-athletes. Jenaisya Moore is an outside hitter from Ohio State, who totaled 841 career kills during her four seasons in Columbus, while Raeven Chase arrives as a two-time All-MAC First Team middle blocker from Eastern Michigan, where she recorded 100 or more blocks during each of her final three seasons.Â

Lauren Woodford, who has two years of eligibility from Syracuse, started all 28 matches for the Orange last year while posting 568 assists. Rounding out the transfers, Bowling Green libero transfer Yelianiz Torres is coming off a season in which she finished with a career-high 579 digs, averaging 4.91 digs per set, and earned MAC All-Tournament Team honors.

With the incoming freshmen, the Lady Vols brought in talent from across the country at all positions. The group makes up one of the top signing classes in the nation for 2023.
