May 11, 2023 | Soccer
Former Tennessee standout Bunny Shaw has been named the 2022 CONCACAF Women's Player of the Year, becoming the first Caribbean woman to earn the award.
She took the honor over Alex Morgan, Jessie Fleming, Melchie Dumornay, Sophia Smith, and Alicia Cervantes, who were also nominated, in the vote that was completed last month.
She was nominated previously in 2018, finishing as runner-up to U.S. Women's National Team player Morgan. The award recognizes the best in the game in both men's and women's soccer in the North American region.
Shaw had a fantastic year on the international stage, leading Jamaica to qualify for its second FIFA Women's World Cup.
Shaw plays for Manchester City in England's Women's Super League and is also in the running for the English Women's Super League's Golden Boot, having broken the club's record for the most goals in a single season by a women's player with her current total standing at 29 goals in 28 appearances during the 2022-23 season.
"Bunny is so deserving of this award. She is such an ambassador of the game, making an impact on and off the field everywhere she has been. She left her legacy here at Tennessee and is continuing to do so with Jamaica and Manchester City," said Tennessee head coach Joe Kirt.
"As one of the top goal scorers in the world, she has propelled each program to the top of their respective leagues. Congratulations to Bunny, and we're excited to see what she accomplishes next, starting with the World Cup this summer."
A 2018 All-American at Tennessee and two-time All-SEC First Team nominee, Shaw tallied 27 goals during her two season on Rocky Top and owns UT career records for points per game (1.86) and goals per game (0.77). Fourteen of those goals were game-winners, with her seven in both 2017 and 2018 ranking first in single-season records.
