Lady Vols Enjoy Solid Start to Big Ten Invitational

SARASOTA, Fla. – Taking on some of the best competition in the country, Tennessee rowing enjoyed a solid start to the Big Ten Invitational on Friday at Nathan Benderson Park.

The 18th-ranked Lady Vols competed in 10 races between five boats throughout the day, with the 2V8 crew leading the way. Going against a loaded field with 15 of the 16 teams ranked inside the top 20 or receiving votes in the latest Pocock CRCA Coaches Poll, Tennessee raced against No. 2 Stanford, No. 19 Alabama, Iowa, Minnesota, Rutgers and Wisconsin.
Abigail Bacci coxed the 2V8 lineup of Kate Schildmeyer, Casey Chronister, Beatrice Bernard, Alex Pidgeon, Riley Ferdelman, Paige Reymann, Sheya Lavin and Haley Savastano to a 5-1 record on the day.

During its first race, the 2V8 crew threw down the top time with a 6:39.260 effort to defeat 19th-ranked Alabama, Iowa and Wisconsin. The mark clocked in faster than the morning times by the first varsity eight boats from Michigan State, Minnesota, UCF, UCLA and Wisconsin.

In their second session of the day, the Lady Vols finished second behind No. 2 Stanford but ahead of Rutgers and Minnesota with a mark of 6:32.082. Among the afternoon second varsity eight races, Tennessee's time was better than that of No. 6 Brown (6:33.475), No. 12 Duke (6:34.226), No. 19 Alabama (6:38.160) and No. 20 Indiana (6:38.941). For the season, the boat owns an impressive 13-3 record.

In the other varsity eight races, the 1V8 recorded wins against Minnesota and Wisconsin throughout the day with a best time of 6:28.852 coming in the afternoon session. The 3V8 boat notched a 4-2 record between its two races. In the morning, the crew topped Alabama and Iowa with a 6:54.184 time before besting Minnesota and Rutgers in the afternoon thanks to a 7:16.927 effort.

In the varsity fours, the 1V4 boat bested No. 19 Alabama and Wisconsin behind a 7:13.462 mark during the morning session, while the 2V4 won its race against the Crimson Tide, Badgers and Iowa with a 7:19.977 effort. Both crews rounded out the day with wins against Minnesota in their respective races. The first varsity four boat included Lauren Reboul, Hannah Smith, Kiana Worobey, Maiya Birdling and Lucy Marret, while the second varsity four was made up of Ella Hill, Kayla Anderson, Alyssa Biernat, Grace Wolfenbarger and Sarah Powell.

The Lady Vols wrap up the Big Ten Invitational tomorrow morning with races against Iowa, Michigan State and UCF. Tennessee begins racing at 9:02 a.m. with the 2V8 boat.
