Horston Headed To NYC For WNBA Draft
April 06, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Tennessee women's basketball standout Jordan Horston has accepted an invitation to be in New York City on Monday for WNBA Draft 2023 presented by State Farm®.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert will announce the draft picks live on ESPN with exclusive coverage beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The draft also will be available live on the ESPN App.
Top prospects will take part live and in-person when the WNBA Draft presented by State Farm tips off at the acclaimed Spring Studios New York, located in the Tribeca section of Manhattan and the home to such iconic events as Fashion Week and The Tribeca Film Festival, serving as the venue for the evening's events.
The Indiana Fever possess the top pick in the WNBA Draft 2023 presented by State Farm, followed by Minnesota, Dallas, Washington and Dallas (again) rounding out the top five.
Horston, who bounced back from a season-ending elbow injury a year ago, finished her career at Tennessee ranked No. 29 in all-time scoring with 1,445 points and No. 7 in career assists with 455, is expected to become the 45th Lady Vol taken in all WNBA Drafts and the 43rd in drafts featuring only college players. She is slated to become the third UT player chosen during the Kellie Harper era, following No. 9 overall picks Rennia Davis (Minnesota) and Rae Burrell (Los Angeles) in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
In mock drafts, Horston is projected to be taken No. 3 (CBS, ESPN) or No. 4 (The Athletic) in the first round. If that is the case, she would become the 20th UT player taken in that round (18th in college-only drafts) and give the program first-round picks in three consecutive drafts for only the second time in the program's rich history.
Harper, in her fourth season at UT and expected to attend on Monday night, would tie Pat Summitt in developing that run of draft picks. Summitt had three straight seasons of first-round selections in 2001 (Tamika Catchings), 2002 (Michelle Snow) and 2003 (Kara Lawson, Gwen Jackson).
A two-time All-America honorable mention selection by the Associated Press and WBCA, and an All-SEC First Team choice in 2022 and 2023 as well, Horston ranked second for the Big Orange in scoring this season at 15.6 ppg. and led UT in rebounding at 7.1 in all games while posting 13.9 ppg. and 7.5 rpg. vs. SEC foes and 18.9 ppg. and 8.7 rpg. vs. 10 ranked foes. Horston carded eight double-doubles as a senior and stands No. 1 among all true guards at Tennessee with 21 for her career.
Horston registered more than 100 assists (117/3.3 apg.) in a season for the third occasion and became only the second Lady Vol in history to lead the team in assists averaged four times. She also joined Alexis Hornbuckle as the only Lady Vols to record more than 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and 400 assists during a career, finishing with 731 rebounds to go along with her previously mentioned points and rebounds totals.
