Taylor Tops Tennessee Triple Jump Record At LSU Invitational
April 29, 2023 | Track & Field, Cross Country
BATON ROUGE, La. — Cementing her place as the No. 1 triple jump performer in Lady Vol history, Tennessee graduate student Charisma Taylor posted a program record mark of 13.82 meters (45-4.25) on Saturday at the LSU Invitational to finish as the top collegiate athlete at the meet and second overall.
The Nassau, Bahamas, now owns both the indoor and outdoor school standards in the triple jump after leaping a remarkable 14.88m (48-10) in March at the NCAA Indoor Championships, ranking No. 2 in collegiate history. Her outdoor performance on Saturday currently ranks No. 9 on the 2023 world list, No. 5 in the NCAA and No. 3 in the SEC this season.
Taylor's top jump at LSU came in the second round as she out-dueled collegiate record holder Jasmine Moore of Florida and NCAA leader Mikiesha Welcome of Georgia. Her mark took down the previous school record of 13.61m (44-8), set by Lady Vol All-American LaChyna Roe in 2018.
The Big Orange totaled 11 top-five finishes at the meet, which featured several of the SEC's top squads two weeks out from the outdoor conference championships. Full results from Saturday can be viewed at the links above.
SEARING DOWN THE TRACK: Lady Vol senior sprinter Jacious Sears had an impressive effort in the 100-meter dash on Saturday, clocking in at a personal-best 11.08 seconds to finish second overall and tops among collegiate athletes at the meet. With a legal tailwind of +1.5 m/s, her mark equaled teammate Joella Lloyd as the No. 2 performer in school history and ranks 12th on the 2023 world list.
On the NCAA and SEC outdoor TFRRS lists, which allow wind readings up to 4.0 m/s, Sears' time ranks 13th in the country and sixth in the SEC this season.
THERE GOES VONTE: Vol junior sprint star Javonte Harding ran the 100-200 double at LSU and came away with two strong showings for the Big Orange. He clocked a wind-aided (+3.3 m/s) time of 10.14 in the 100-meter dash to place fourth overall and move into the nation's top-20 this season, and closed the meet as the top collegian in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.44 into a slight headwind.
Harding also anchored the Vols' 4x100-meter relay squad, combining with T'Mars McCallum, Emmanuel Bynum and Nigel Green for a time of 39.18 as the unit placed third overall in Baton Rouge.
MUSIC CITY, PR CITY: Tennessee's distance crew was represented at the Music City Challenge this weekend, with four Lady Vols posting PRs in the 800-meter run. Carolyn Barksdale (2:08.72), Maia Stewart (2:10.13), Brooke Dixon (2:10.87) and Emily Knight (2:11.45) each ran lifetime-best marks on a cloudy Saturday in Nashville.
Vol senior Will Mazur was victorious in the men's 800-meter with a season-best time of 1:50.37, securing the first individual win of his collegiate career.
CHEYLA GOT UP: One week after tying the program record in the high jump, true freshman Lady Vol Cheyla Scott took second at the LSU Invite with a jump of 1.81m (5-11.25). Her season-best and UT record mark of 1.83m (6-0) ranks ninth nationally and tied for first among NCAA Division I freshmen this season.
