Mertena Earns Win No. 100, Though Lady Vols Fall, 6-1
March 31, 2023 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Playing its second consecutive top-10 team, the No. 14 Tennessee women's tennis team fell at No. 2 Texas A&M, 6-1, Friday afternoon at Mitchell Tennis Center.
Rebeka Mertena highlighted the day of play for the Lady Volunteers (13-4, 6-2 SEC) earning her 100th career singles victory with a win on Court 2. She was a driving force in supplying much of the momentum for the Big Orange, but they couldn't seem to sustain it for extended periods of time.
"That's two back-to-back solid performances against top-five teams where we fought hard and gave ourselves chances to win," head coach Alison Ojeda said after the match. "We believe that we can win, now it's time to walk on court expecting to win."
Tennessee's day was highlighted by Rebeka Mertena on Court 2. The No. 31 ranked player in the country was incredibly strong against Selma Ewing, especially in the second set, as she toppled the Aggies' No. 2, 6-4, 6-0.
Mertena now becomes the ninth Lady Vol in program history to eclipse the century mark in singles victories.
