Lady Vols Wrap Up Season Opener With Wins Against Louisville
March 19, 2023 | Rowing
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – After a successful two days of competition, Tennessee rowing concluded its season-opening regatta with wins against Louisville at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite at Melton Hill Lake.
Â
"I think the team was prepared to take on the competition, and they executed the way we had planned to and were able to move their speed forward throughout the weekend," Head Coach Lisa Glenn said. "That is what you want on a race weekend like this early season. Lots of good competition, and it was an opportunity to learn a lot in two days. I think we came away with a really solid sense of what we've accomplished so far, and where we need to go.
Â
"Competition is all about adversity, and so when you prepare, you hopefully run across adversity—such as today's below freezing temperatures—during training. When it's freezing rain outside, we go out and train. When it's super windy and there's chop on the water, we go out and train. When it's 28 degrees, we go out and train. Today, it was 24 but not a whole lot different from what we've done normally. You know it's going to be cold and so you mentally sort of prepare for that. The athletes have a ritual that they go through before each race and included in that is warming up. They know when it's 10 degrees cooler than normal or 15 degrees cooler than normal, their warm up consists of a little more diligent effort on land before we get on the water and then just keep moving on the water. Today's weather wasn't anything we haven't seen before. Part of our job as coaches is to make sure that they've seen most of what we can foresee happening before the races come."
Â
In the 1V8 boat, the Lady Vols topped host Louisville with a time of 6:33.929, which was the third-fastest effort among all the first varsity eight races of the day. The crew, which consisted of Elizabeth Walley, Reagan Long, Emma Seawright, Natalia Loram, Logan Yates, Erin Gifford, Katie Rice, Casey Chronister and Sydney Pardy, put together a 5-2 record to open the season.
Â
In the tightest race of the day, the Tennessee 2V8 boat finished less than 0.1 seconds behind Duke to take second with a 6:31.361 effort. The Big Orange bested Wisconsin lightweight and Louisville in the race, as Abigail Bacci coxed the lineup of Kate Schildmeyer, Gabriela Natale, Beatrice Bernard, Alex Pidgeon, Riley Ferdelman, Paige Reymann, Sheya Lavin and Haley Savastano to a 6-2 record on the weekend.
Â
In the varsity fours, the 3V4 lineup preserved its perfect 5-0 weekend Sunday by outpacing Duke with a 7:28.829 mark, which was one of the fastest times of the day by any varsity four boat. The 1V4 (7:32.953) and the 2V4 (7:35.750) boats also posted victories against Louisville in their races.
Â
The Lady Vols return to action on Saturday, April 1, for a home matchup against Big 12 foes Alabama and Oklahoma. The competition will be held at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and it is free for all fans.
