Lady Vols Log Six Wins on Day 1 of Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – Tennessee rowing began its 2023 season with a bang Saturday, winning a combined six races between two sessions at Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite at Melton Hill Lake.

"The team was excited to get out there and race after months of preparation," Head Coach Lisa Glenn said. "We love our course in Oak Ridge and appreciate Louisville hosting this early season event. Our crews are showing excellent teamwork and competitiveness on the course. Our coaching staff continues to do a great job of developing the athletes. I look forward to further tapping into the potential these qualities offer our program in the coming weeks."

After besting Clemson in the first session of the day, the Lady Vol 1V8 topped Big 12 rival Alabama and Wisconsin in the afternoon thanks to a 6:22.416 effort. Elizabeth Walley coxed the crew of Reagan Long, Emma Seawright, Natalia Loram, Logan Yates, Erin Gifford, Katie Rice, Casey Chronister and Sydney Pardy to the third-fastest overall time of any first varsity eight race of the session.

The 2V8 boat enjoyed the same success, garnering wins against Alabama, Clemson and Wisconsin on the day. In its second race, the crew of Abigail Bacci, Kate Schildmeyer, Gabriela Natale, Beatrice Bernard, Alex Pidgeon, Riley Ferdelman, Paige Reymann, Sheya Lavin and Haley Savastano clocked an impressive 6:22.623 time, narrowly off the Big Orange's top boat. Only fifth-ranked Yale posted a better time in the 2V8 races on the day.

The varsity four boats enjoyed strong showings, with the 3V4 boat posting a perfect 4-0 record on the day with wins against Clemson, Duke, Indiana and Notre Dame. After getting the win in the morning session with a time of 7:15.136, the squad of Laila Irigoyen, Megan Czarnecki, Grace Wolfenbarger, Ava Sangiuliano and Morgan Marshall outpaced the Fighting Irish by 20 seconds and the Tigers by one minute in the afternoon slate.

The 1V4 lineup of Lauren Reboul, Maiya Birdling, Kiana Worobey, Hannah Smith and Lucy Marret went 3-1 on the day with its lone loss coming at the hands of Yale. The crew's top effort of the day was a 7:16.760 to beat the Crimson Tide and Badgers.

Overall, each Lady Vol crew finished with at least two victories on the day to kick off the season.
