VFL Trey Smith, A Super Bowl LVII Champion
February 13, 2023 | Football
VFL offensive lineman Trey Smith became the latest former Tennessee player to claim a Super Bowl ring as his Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35, in a Super Bowl LVII thriller on Sunday night in Glendale, Arizona.
Smith, a native of Jackson, Tennessee, played every offensive snap at right guard as the Chiefs did not allow a sack and protected against the NFL's top defensive line.
Smith becomes the 40th former Vol to win a Super Bowl ring as a player. A total of 40 players have now combined for 49 rings in the game's history.
It's a culmination of success for Smith, who is a Super Bowl champion in just his second season. His other playoff appearance was an AFC Championship game.
Smith has been dominant at right guard at the pro level after a decorated high school career in Tennessee followed by multiple first-team All-SEC accolades in Knoxville.
He was sidelined during the 2018 offseason with blood clots but fought his way back and in 2019, helped lead the Volunteers to a Gator Bowl victory.
Off the field, Smith was awarded the university's highest student honor when he was announced as a Torchbearer Award recipient in 2021. He was a two-time SEC Community Service Team honoree, and he won the 2019 Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year.
Smith is poised for a strong professional career after logging over 2,500 snaps in his first two seasons.
