KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee men's basketball team is once again the top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, placing No. 10, as announced Monday afternoon.
Tennessee (4-2) also comes in at No. 11 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. This is the 42nd straight week the Volunteers are ranked, including their 17th time in the AP top 10 during that stretch.
Last week, Tennessee went 1-2 in a loaded Allstate Maui Invitational field that featured, at the time, six teams in the Coaches Poll top 25, including five in the top 10, three in the top five and each of the top two. The Volunteers opened play with a 73-56 triumph over Syracuse, before dropping a narrow 61-57 decision to then-second-ranked Purdue and a hard-fought 69-60 result to then-top-ranked Kansas. The contests came across back-to-back-to-back days in Honolulu.
The Volunteers went from 1,136 points in the AP Poll last week to 967 this week, as well as from 584 to 462 in the Coaches Poll. They dropped just three spots in each listing after a week in which, per FOX Sports Research, they became the first team since January 1972 to play the AP No. 1 and No. 2 teams on consecutive days.
Tennessee is once again the highest-ranked team in the SEC, leading a group of five conference programs featured in the polls. It is joined by No. 12 Kentucky, No. 14/13 Texas A&M, No. 21/22 Mississippi State and No. 23/20 Alabama. In addition, Auburn and Arkansas are receiving votes in both polls, while Ole Miss and South Carolina are doing so in the AP Poll, and Florida doing so in the Coaches Poll.
The Volunteers continue play Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C., where they take on a third consecutive top-20 foe in No. 17/16 North Carolina, live on ESPN from the Dean E. Smith Center as part of the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge.
