October 12, 2023 | Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving, Men's Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The sixth-ranked Lady Vols tallied a top-five victory in a close battle during their home-opening meet against Louisville on Thursday afternoon at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, while the No. 6 Vols came up just short against the Cardinals.
Â
The women were victorious against the third-ranked Cardinals, outscoring them 152-148. The men battled but lost 156-144 at the hands of No. 12 Louisville.
Â
Josephine Fuller tallied three individual victories to pace the Lady Vols on the day, winning the 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM while also finishing first in the 200 medley relay. Quotables
"I thought we performed pretty well today. I loved the competitive environment that this competition in particular brings. It's amongst one of my favorite dual meets every year. Louisville is incredibly competitive, and they did a great job. We got off to a really hot start in the beginning part of the meet with a lot of event wins and some one-two performances, which was really impressive. Then, we fell back a little bit. Louisville got a little bit of an injection of energy, and their second half of the meet was very strong. We had an opportunity to take it down to the last relay and keep it competitive and interesting. I think it's one of the great rivalries in our sport. I'm happy to come away with one win. We have some things we have to clean up, both competitively and technically. It was great that they helped us see those areas that we need to get better at." - Associate Head Coach Ashley Jahn
Â
"For sure early on they looked like a team that had raced a really competitive invitational last week in Dallas which they did and they did really well there and won their meet. They looked like a team that was coming off of a hard-fought team win. We came out of the gates a little slow and I think that took us a while to gather ourselves after a couple of early losses. Martin Espernberger was really significant, winning both of his events. I think especially the 200 fly, he put up an outstanding swim. That really put us back in the meet and we really appreciated his effort there. Part of the reason why we set up this meet on this day in particular was because it would allow everybody who is going to the PanAm games to sharpen up before that meet. Also, give us a clear sense of where they're at and what they need going into the meet. I think it served that purpose really well. We had some good swims from Gui (Caribe) in the 100 free and Jordan (Crooks), Joaquin Vargas in the 400 free and I think this meet served them really well leading into PanAm's. Also, there were some really good swims from Harrison Lierz, I thought he was his steady, consistent self. Landon (Driggers) really built his impact on the meet as we went through. Also, was really happy to see Björn (Kammann) follow up Martin (Espernberger) in that 100 fly. I think that was a really good swim for him and bodes well for our next meet." - Associate Head Coach Rich Murphy
Â
"It was solid. This time of year, it's early. You would prefer to not see mistakes, but it's the time of the year where we do have some hiccups. There were a lot of positives out there today. I felt like our divers were very competitive against a very competitive team of Louisville divers, like their swimmers. Bryden Hattie got up and did a really good job on the 3-meter. He was in a very close contest in the 1-meter, and he just came up a little shy. We were focusing more on the 3-meter as he leaves for the Pan American games on Sunday. That's been a high priority. The rest of the men's team did a solid job. With the women's team, I'm really pleased with the steps that our freshman Lynae Shorter took today on the 3-meter to help us score. Tanesha Lucoe got a score as well. For the most part, it was positive, but we have some things to work on." - Diving Coach Dave Parrington
