September 02, 2022 | Track & Field, Cross Country
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Eli Nahom and Andie-Marie Jones kick-started the 2022 Tennessee cross country season Friday morning as they led the Vols and Lady Vols to victory over Chattanooga in the Tennessee Cross Country Invitational at Cherokee Farms.
Friday's race was the first under Head Coach and Director of Cross Country/Distance Sean Carlson.
"It was awesome to see both the men and women buy into what we have been doing every day in practice," Carlson said. "They ran as a team, got synergy off of each other and we were able to get the wins. We had a great crowd this morning and everybody seems excited for a new era of Tennessee cross country.
"I want to thank all of our administration for coming out to the meet. It shows how much support there is from the university for the distance program. I want to give a shout-out to president Randy Boyd for starting our meet and our athletic director Danny White, having both of them here was phenomenal."
MEN'S RACE RECAP
Nahom led the Vols across the finish line at 20:38.04, earning the first win of his cross country career. The New Milford, Connecticut, native set a personal-best time in the four-mile with his finish. Newcomer Jacob Lewis followed closely behind, placing second at 20:38.07.
Riley Buchholz crossed in fourth at 20:48.37, with Will Cronin and Canaan Anderson rounding out UT's top five at 20:54.43 and 21:00.35.
"The men all keyed off each other really well the whole race," Carlson said. "They worked together, which I really liked, after a really hard training block. The last 1000-meters, they all did what they needed to do to get our team the win."
WOMEN'S RACE RECAP
Jones capped off her Tennessee debut with a win in the women's three-mile race Friday morning. The freshman led a pack of Lady Vols across the finish line in 18:33.83. Callie Tucker was hot on her heels as she placed second at 18:33.87.
Kayla Gholar and Msgana Araya finished third and fourth, respectively, at 18:33.94 and 18:34.18. Rachel Sutliff crossed the line in sixth at 18:36.02.
"Running together and sticking as a pack is going to be key for the women's team," Carlson said after the race. "I think today was a really good start to that and created the synergy that they are going to need throughout the course of the season."
On Andie-Marie Jones winning her debut race…
"It is exciting to know that we have her for another four years," Carlson said. "It was a great start to her Tennessee cross country career."
