KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee assistant coach Becky Edwards is serving as an assistant coach of the U.S. Under-20 Women's Youth National Team under head coach Tracey Kevins at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica.
Edwards joined the U-20 coaching staff in June, traveling to France for the 2022 Sud Ladies Cup where the USA went undefeated against France, Mexico, and the Netherlands to bring home the title.
The USA is currently competing in the group stage at the World Cup and won its opening match against Ghana on Thursday, 3-0. The squad will be back in action on Sunday against the Netherlands at 7 p.m. ET (FS1). When the teams met in June, they played to a 2-2 draw. The USA's final group stage match will be against Japan at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 17 (FS2).
"We are very excited for Becky and the entire U.S. team as they look to bring home a World Championship from Costa Rica," said Tennessee head coach Joe Kirt. "It's an incredible opportunity for Becky to win a second U-20 World Cup, this time as part of the coaching staff. We are excited for her to join us later this month but know she has unfinished business in Costa Rica right now."
Following the group stage, the top two finishers of each group advance to the quarterfinals, to be held on Saturday, Aug. 20 and Sunday, Aug. 21. The winners of those matches move on to the semifinals on Thursday, Aug. 25. The Championship and Third-Place match will be played on Sunday, Aug 28. The USA is one of four teams to have qualified for every FIFA WWC at the U-20 level, along with three-time champions Germany, Brazil and Nigeria.
