July 11, 2022 | Cross Country
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Head coach and Director of Cross Country/Distance Sean Carlson announced Monday that he has added Nic Jacobsen to his staff as an assistant coach.
Jacobsen comes to Rocky Top after spending the past year assisting the Notre Dame cross country and track & field programs in coaching and recruiting. Last fall, he helped recruit a class that included six student-athletes who broke 9:00 over 3,200-meters. It was the top-ranked men's cross country recruiting class in the nation according to Milesplit.com.
"I am thrilled to have Coach Jacobsen come with me to Rocky Top," Carlson said. "He will be an extremely valuable asset as an assistant coach and help us build a NCAA title contending program at Tennessee."
During the 2021 cross country season, Jacobsen helped guide the Irish to an ACC Championship and a ninth-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Two Notre Dame athletes – Dylan Jacobs and Danny Kilrea – earned USTFCCCA All-America honors.
On the track, Jacobsen assisted in coaching the distance runners to one of the most illustrious years in program history. At the Boston University Valentine Invitational during the indoor season, Yared Nuguse set an NCAA record in the 3,000m with a time of 7:38.13, while Dylan Jacobs set an American Collegiate Record in the indoor 5,000m with a time of 13:14.04. At the ACC Indoor Championships, Matthew Carmody and Josh Methner took first and second place in the 5,000m, while Jacobs won the league title in the 3,000m. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Notre Dame Men's Distance Medley Relay finished in second place.
Outdoors, Jacobsen helped foster the development of Jacobs as he won an NCAA title in the 10,000m. At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Irish qualified two men in the 800m, one in the 3000m steeplechase, one in the 5000m, and four in the 10,000m.
Prior to Notre Dame, Jacobsen was the cross country and track coach at Saint Andrew's School in Boca Raton, Florida, where he coached athletes to three FHSAA state championships during the 2020-21 school year.
Jacobsen was a member of the varsity track and cross country teams at New York University, where he studied Psychology, Leadership, and Politics in Sport.
