Pinnock Wins Long Jump National Championship, Vols Place Four on Podium
June 09, 2022 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman Wayne Pinnock won his second NCAA national title Wednesday night at Hayward Field in Eugene, while three more Vols secured podium finishes on the first night of the 2022 Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.
Pinnock won the men's long jump national championship in dramatic fashion as he clinched the crown on the very last jump of the event. Sitting second behind Florida State's Jeremiah Davis who had the best mark at 8.00m (26-3), Pinnock had the luxury of leaping last in the group after topping all of the competitors after the first three jumps.
On his sixth and final attempt, the Kingston, Jamaica, native matched Davis' distance at 8.00m (26-3) but claimed the national title as his next-best jump at 7.96m (26-1.5) was better than Davis' second-best leap.
Pinnock's first-place finish gives him a sweep of the NCAA long jump national titles after he won the indoor long jump crown in March.
The two-time national champion was joined on the long jump podium by teammates Carey McLeod and Anthony Riley. McLeod placed fourth in the event with a best jump of 7.90m (25-11). It is his second time placing on the outdoor long-jump medal stand. With his placement, the Kingston, Jamaica, native earned first-team All-America honors – his ninth Division I All-America accolade but the 10th of his career.
Over the course of six jumps, Riley set his personal-best mark three times. His first attempt landed at 7.69m (25-2.75), with his third jump coming in at 7.72m (25-4). On his fifth leap, Riley went 7.80m (25-7.25), which is now his personal best.
That mark also secured Riley eighth-place overall and first-team All-America honors.
Jordan West was the fourth Vol to podium on Wednesday after a gutsy performance in the men's shot put. Sitting in eighth place after the first three throws, West heaved 20.28m (66-6.5) on his fourth attempt and catapulted up the standings.
The Rahway, New Jersey, native finished fourth overall and earned first-team All-America honors. It is the fifth time in West's career he has earned All-America accolades.
MULTIS UPDATE
The decathlon got underway Wednesday with Yariel Soto representing the Orange & White. He currently sits 11th in the standings after the first five events with 4,006 points. The Hatillo, Puerto Rico, native ended the day on a strong note as he set a personal best in the 400-meter, finishing at 48.10 seconds.
The 10-event competition will conclude Thursday as the athletes compete in the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m run.
