Ashe, Pinnock Earn SEC Freshman of the Year Honors, 10 Vols & Lady Vols Tabbed All-SEC
June 01, 2022 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee freshmen Favour Ashe and Wayne Pinnock have been named the SEC's 2022 Outdoor Track and Field Freshman Runner of the Year and Freshman Field Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday. Ashe and Pinnock were also named to the All-SEC First Team and All-Freshman Team, two of 10 Tennessee student-athletes to receive all-conference recognition.
The SEC yearly awards were voted on by the league's 15 head coaches, and All-SEC teams were determined based on performances at the outdoor conference championships. Individual champions were named to the All-SEC First Team, while silver and bronze medalists were tabbed All-SEC Second Team. Additionally, the top freshman in each event earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team.
Ashe is the third Vol to earn SEC Outdoor Freshman Runner of the Year accolades, joining Dentarius Locke (2011) and Christian Coleman (2015). The Ughelli, Nigeria, native was the SEC champion in the men's 100-meter dash – winning the title in 10.04 seconds – and broke the Tennessee freshman record en route to his victory.
He garnered All-SEC First Team honors with his first-place finish in the 100m dash. He also scored points for the Vols as a member of the men's 4x100-meter relay. Running with Wayne Pinnock, Carey McLeod and Emmanuel Bynum, the quartet placed fourth with a time of 39.52 seconds at the SEC Championships.
Earlier this season, the sprinter clocked a windy 9.79 (+3.0) 100m dash at the LSU Invitational. That mark is the fastest 100m time in the nation this season and is the fifth-fastest all-conditions time in NCAA history.
In the field, Pinnock joins Joseph Berry (2008) as the only Vols to win SEC Freshman Field Athlete of the Year honors. At the 2022 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Pinnock won the men's long jump SEC crown, leaping 8.05m (26-5.00).
The Kingston, Jamaica, native ran on the fourth-place finishing men's 4x100-meter relay at the SEC Championships, scoring critical points in UT's push to a third-place team finish. Pinnock was joined on the relay by Ashe, Carey McLeod and Emmanuel Bynum. The foursome finished in 39.52 seconds.
At Auburn's War Eagle Invite during the regular season, he broke the UT rookie record in the men's long jump as he leaped 8.06m (26-5.5).
