Lady Vols Fall to #6 NC State Despite Strong Doubles Effort
May 08, 2022 | Women's Tennis
RALEIGH, N.C. – The season came to a close for the 22nd-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team which fell to No. 6 NC State, 4-1, in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Championship, Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
Tennessee (16-10) was superb in doubles, claiming the point with victories on Court 1 and Court 2.
On Court 1, 41st-ranked Rebeka Mertena and Esther Adeshina pulled out a convincing upset victory over top-ranked Jaeda Daniel and Nell Miller, 6-3, to even the doubles portion at one apiece after NC State won on Court 3.
The won over the No. 1 doubles pair was the Lady Volunteers' second victory over the top-ranked doubles team this season as Tenika McGiffin and Daria Kuczer defeated the No. 1 team at the Tar Heel Invitational back in January.
With two matches in the books, it all came down to Court 2 and, as it has recently, the clinch was secured in dramatic fashion in a tiebreaker. McGiffin and Elza Tomase faced No. 24 Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli. The match was back-and-forth throughout and the Wolfpack duo capitalized early in the tiebreak, taking a 4-1 lead. The graduate student/freshman team countered with a five-point run of their own, going up 6-4. The sides then traded blows for the next six points, but the Lady Vols were able to secure the win, and with it the doubles point, 7-6(7).
Tennessee was able to break NC State's 13-match doubles point streak. It also marked only the third time all season the Wolfpack has lost the doubles point.
In singles, UT got ahead early, but a strong NC State (25-5) overcame the Lady Vols, earning singles victories on Court 5, 6, 4 and 1, in that order.
Tomase was up 4-0 in the second set tiebreaker, after holding a set lead, when the match was clinched and was just three points from winning 30 singles matches in her freshman season
McGiffin also held a 4-3 lead in the third set on Court 2 when the match went final.
