Tennessee Inks Grad Transfer Kent Hunter
May 25, 2022 | Men's Tennis
Kent Hunter has signed an institutional aid agreement with the Tennessee men's tennis team and will join the Vols as a graduate student for the 2022-23 season.
Originally from Compton, California, Hunter spent his first collegiate season at Cerritos College, before playing at The University of California for two seasons, Berkeley and attending LSU for his senior campaign.
An All-SEC Second Team member during the 2021-22 season with the Tigers, Hunter logged a 16-4 overall singles record, including a 7-3 mark in SEC singles play. Hunter was 5-1 at the No. 2 singles spot and 11-3 at the No. 3 position. On the doubles courts, Hunter was 17-9 overall, all of which came during the dual season. He finished the year 15-8 at No. 2 doubles and picked up five total doubles wins with Boris Kozlov, who also transferred to Tennessee.
"We're really excited about Kent coming to Knoxville," associate head coach James McKie said. "He's a top player with a really high ceiling and will immediately help this program. He knows what our goals are next year and he will help us get there. His story is unique and it motivates us even more to help him be as successful as he can possibly be on and off the court."
Hunter joins the Vols holding a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) of 13.36.
In his first season at Cal, Hunter went 9-7 in singles and 6-3 in doubles. Then, as a junior, he made his spring season debut by going 12-8 in singles matches.
Prior to Cal, Hunter attended Cerritos College, where he was a 2018 ITA Junior College All-American in singles and doubles. At Cerritos in 2017-18, Hunter posted a 28-1 singles record and a 24-1 doubles record.
