Walton Moves On To NCAA Singles Round of 16, Harper and Walton Advance in Doubles

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A second straight-set singles win in as many days for Tennessee men's tennis graduate student Adam Walton saw the Aussie double-down on his All-American status by advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship Tuesday in Champaign, Illinois.

The 13th-ranked Tennessee Aussie duo of Walton and Pat Harper also advanced in the doubles draw Tuesday, defeating San Diego's #22 August Holmgren and Guilherm Osorio, 6-3, 6-2.

Down 15-40 on a service game with the first set tied 3-3, Walton and Harper avoided a break and used that momentum to break the San Diego pair and go up 5-3 before serving out the set. In the second set, the Aussies went up a pair of breaks at 4-1 en route to an eventual 6-2 victory.

In the morning, third-ranked Walton took down #42 Steven Forman of Northwestern in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Walton earned a break in the match's first game, before being broken back for a 1-all tie in the first set. Walton went up a break at 3-1 and a pair of breaks at 5-1, before eventually holding serve on deuce point to take a 6-3 first-set victory.

In the second set, Walton went up a pair of early breaks, leading 3-0. Forman earned a break on deuce point as Walton was still up a set and a break. Walton responded by breaking Forman once more and then serving out the set, taking it 6-2 and winning 12 of the match's 17 games.

Tennessee's second singles match of the day saw sophomore and #10 Johannus Monday drop his Round of 32 match to #39 Inaki Montes de la Torre of Virginia, 2-6, 1-6.

In the evening, Tennessee's 21st-ranked doubles pairing of Emile Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui dropped a tight battle against #17 Justin Boulais and James Trotter of Ohio State, 5-7, 6-2, 0-1 (7-10).
