Vols Card Best Round Two Score In Field, Move Up Leaderboard at NCAA Regionals
May 17, 2022 | Men's Golf
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 4 seed Tennessee men's golf team shot the best round of any team in the field of the Bryan NCAA Regional Tuesday and is just four strokes outside of the top five entering Wednesday's final round.
The Vols shot 4-under for the day on Tuesday after shooting 7-over as a team on Monday. Tennessee is in seventh place, but just four strokes back from fifth-place Oregon State.
Following Wednesday's third round of competition, the top five teams from the Bryan NCAA Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which are set to take place from May 27 to June 1 in Scottsdale, Arizona, at Grayhawk Golf Club.
Tennessee's success on Tuesday was in large part due to the play of Spencer Cross, who shot 4-under—making five total birdies. Cross' 4-under was tied for the best round of any golfer in the field during round two and marks his 22nd round of par or better this season.
The 2022 first-team All-SEC selection is tied for 13th place with a two-round score of 2-under.
Jake Hall gave Tennessee its second-best round of the day—rebounding from a tough start on Monday to shoot 1-under on Tuesday. Hall shot 7-over in round one, but became one of just 18 golfers in the 75-man field to shot below par during round two.
Hall is 6-over through two rounds and tied for 49th place.
For the second straight day, Tyler Johnson held steady at even par and is tied for 21st place—on pace for his seventh top-25 finish this season. Johnson now has 18 rounds of par or better and 24.5 counting rounds (of 29 possible) this season.
Like Cross and Hall, Bryce Lewis improved upon his round one score—shooting 1-over after Monday's 3-over outing and giving the Vols their final counting round of the day.
The second-team All-SEC honoree is tied for 37th place at 4-over through two rounds.
Hunter Wolcott is tied with Hall 6-over through two rounds after shooting 4-over during round two. Wolcott gave Tennessee a counting round on Monday, shooting 2-over.
