May 15, 2022 | Rowing
AUSTIN, Texas – The top two Lady Vol varsity eight boats led the way for 20th-ranked Tennessee during Sunday's Big 12 Championship at Walter E. Long Lake.
Â
Tennessee's 1V8 and 2V8 lineups won silver medals at the championship to score a combined 60 points on the day, fueling the Big Orange to a second-place finish in the NCAA Automatic Qualifier races with 64 points.
Â
"I'm pleased for our first varsity and second varsity eights," head coach Lisa Glenn said. "The second varsity showed improvement from early season to now, while the first varsity continuously put together, race for race, a dynamic and memorable regular season.
Â
"We know competition at a high level is about facing and handling adversity. Our 1V8 crew–all nine of them—has embraced that and more all season. I'm so pleased with how they have led the team, how they have faced unforeseen challenges and what they've accomplished as a crew so far this season. To come in and improve to a second-place finish at the conference championship is great."
Â
Madelyn Walsh coxed the 1V8 lineup of Emma Seawright, Natalia Loram, Kathleen Rice, Reagan Long, Jaimie Armitage, Lindsey Morrissett, Sydney Pardy and Erin Gifford to a 6:53.612 time. The second-place finish brought the boat's strong record to 21-7 on the year. Armitage, Rice, Seawright and Walsh were tabbed to the All-Big 12 Rowing Team.
Â
UT's 2V8 boat threw down a mark of 7:06.389 to take second. The group of Haley Savastano, Katherine Schildmeyer, Casey Chronister, Logan Yates, Kayla Anderson, Riley Ferdelman, Paige Reymann and Alyssa Biernat was coxed by Elizabeth Walley.
Â
In the other three races on the day, UT's third varsity eight took fifth in its race, while both varsity fours finished seventh. Overall, Tennessee finished third in the Big 12 Championship standings.
Â
Up next, the NCAA Championships will take place on May 27-29 in Sarasota, Florida. The Lady Vols will await their fate to see if they receive an at-large bid for the championships with Tuesday's selection show at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
