Cross also receives SEC Community Service team honors for third straight year
For just the second time since 2010, two Tennessee men's golfers have been named All-SEC performers, the conference announced Friday.
Â
Senior Spencer Cross was named first team All-SEC, while redshirt sophomore Bryce Lewis was a second team All-SEC selection. Cross was also selected to the SEC Community Service Team for the third straight year.
Â
"With as many elite programs and players that we have in our league it is a tremendous accomplishment to be named to an All-SEC team, and Spencer and Bryce are very deserving of this recognition," Tennessee head coach Brennan Webb said.
Â
Cross and Lewis' selections mark the second time under the direction of Webb in which the Vols have had two All-SEC selections—joining 2020, when Cross and Rhys Nevin were both second team honorees.
Â
In his final season as a Vol, Cross has been the most consistent force in Tennessee's lineup. The Sevierville native finished the season fourth in the SEC and first on the team in stroke average—posting 69.59 mark in 27 total rounds. Of those 27 rounds, Cross shot par or better in 21 of them.
Â
Cross concluded the regular season with his first career collegiate individual title at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial in Charlottesville, Virginia, and followed it up with a tied-for-fifth-place finish in the stroke play portion of the SEC Championships. Cross has been Tennessee's highest finisher in its past five tournaments.
Â
Overall this season, Cross has eight top-20 finishes—including five top-10 finishes.
Â
This year's honor marks the second All-SEC distinction of Cross' Tennessee career, as he was named second team All-SEC in 2020. The Sevierville native is the 14th golfer in program history to be named All-SEC two times.
Â
Cross, who just over a week ago also earned the SEC's 2021-22 Brad Davis Community Service Award, was also named to the SEC Community Service Team for the third year in a row. Cross has racked up 66 registered community service hours during his time as a Vol and has stayed active in the Sevierville community.
Â
Competing as a full-time member of Tennessee's lineup for the second straight season, Lewis finished the season second on the team and 13th in the SEC with a 70.67 stroke average.
Â
Lewis recorded a top-10 finish three times this season and finished inside the top-25 during six of Tennessee's seven spring tournaments. Lewis was also second on the team in counting rounds (24.5) and rounds of par or better (18).
Â
After posting a 73.00 stroke average in the fall, the Hendersonville native improved his stroke average by three total strokes—completing the spring with a 70.00 average.
Â
Cross, Lewis and the Vols begin NCAA Regional competition on Monday in Bryan-College Station, Texas at Traditions Club. The Vols will play one round per day from Monday through Wednesday.
Â
The top five teams from each of the six NCAA regionals will then advance to the NCAA Championships, to be contested from May 27 to June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
