April 05, 2022 | Baseball
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The accolades continue to roll in for Tennessee freshman pitcher Drew Beam following his incredible string of performances in recent weeks.
After being named the SEC Pitcher and Freshman of the Week on Monday, Beam has been tabbed the Dick Howser Trophy National Pitcher of the Month for March and the National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association.
Beam earned the win in all four of his starts during the month of March while posting a 1.40 ERA with 20 strikeouts and just three walks against the likes of Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Ole Miss.
The Murfreesboro, Tennessee, native, was nearly unhittable in his SEC debut on March 20 against the Gamecocks, allowing just one hit in 7.2 shutout innings. Beam followed that with another stellar outing in his first SEC road start at then No. 1-ranked Ole Miss, holding the Rebels high-powered lineup to just one run on three hits in 7.1 innings. He tied a career high with six strikeouts as UT swept Ole Miss in Oxford for the first time ever.
Beam continued his incredible debut season by going the distance last Sunday at Vanderbilt, throwing the first complete-game shutout by a UT pitcher since Garrett Stallings vs. Ole Miss on May 16, 2019.
The freshman right hander allowed just two hits, faced one batter over the minimum and did not allow a single Vandy player to advance past first base for the entire game. Beam retired the last 16 batters he faced in the contest and did not issue a walk while finishing with four strikeouts as the Vols completed their first series sweep over the Commodores since 2009.
Following Sunday's gem, Beam has pitched at least 7.1 innings in each of his three SEC starts this season and has allowed just six hits and one run combined in those three outings, posting a 0.38 ERA and holding opposing hitters to a .078 batting average in those appearances.
Beam is the second Vol to earn player of the week recognition from the NCBWA this season, joining Trey Lipscomb, who was named National Co-Hitter of the Week on March 1.
