Lady Vols Fall in Heartbreaker to Georgia at SEC Championship
April 23, 2022 | Women's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Tennessee's run at the 2022 SEC Championship came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Lady Vols fell to No. 14 Georgia, 4-3, at Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in the semifinal round.
It was a battle on all nine courts as the doubles point and the match were both decided in tiebreaker sets.
The clinch for Georgia (17-5) came on Court 2 as Tenika McGiffin and Dasha Vidmanova battled through a second-set tiebreak. Vidmanova took the first set, 6-4, but the two sides went back and forth throughout the second. McGiffin, facing four match points while the Bulldog freshman served, got a massive break to send it to a winner-take-all frame, but could not pull it out as UGA won the set, 7-6(3).
Early on, Tennessee (15-9) created incredible momentum through the doubles point. Daria Kuczer and Eleonora Molinaro captured the first match of the afternoon, 6-2, on Court 3. After the Lady Vols fell on Court 1, it all came down to McGiffin and Elza Tomase on Court 2. The match that would decide the doubles point was also back-and-forth, with both sides matching breaks and holding serve. Tennessee got a late break, down 6-5, to force the tiebreak. Staying true to form, the Lady Vols won the point with a dramatic 7-5 tiebreak win to take the match, 7-6, and put UT on the board early.
In singles, the Lady Vols shined on Courts 3 and 6. Tomase delivered the first winner of the afternoon, 6-3, 6-4. She was quickly followed by Molinaro who downed Mai Nirundorn 7-5, 6-4.
