ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – A pair of birdies on the 18th hole from Spencer Cross and Jake Hall sent Tennessee to match play of the SEC Championships Friday, as the Vols finished the 54-hole stroke play in seventh place as a team.
With Tennessee 5-over as a team entering its final hole of the day, Cross and Hall each sank birdie putts to move the Vols to 3-over for the day and into eighth place—one stroke better than then-ninth-place Mississippi State. Auburn later fell below Tennessee and Mississippi State in the team standings, pushing the Vols into seventh place and the Bulldogs into the eighth and final spot in match play.
As the seventh-place finisher in stroke play, Tennessee will take on second-place finisher Texas A&M Saturday at 8:20 a.m. ET in the quarterfinal round of SEC Championships match play.
The Vols have now advanced to match play of the SEC Championships in each of their three times at the event under head coach Brennan Webb. Tennessee was eliminated in the quarterfinals in 2019 and 2021.
Thanks to his birdie on hole 18, Cross concluded stroke play having shot par or better during each of the three rounds—finishing with a 54-hole total of 3-under. Cross bogeyed hole 12 and birdied hole 18, but shot par on every other hole Friday. The Sevierville native finished tied for fifth place overall.
It marks Cross' second consecutive top-five individual finish at the SEC Championships and his second straight top-five finish overall after winning the individual title at the regular season finale Lewis Chitengwa Memorial. Cross finished in fourth place at the 2021 SEC Championships.
Tennessee's other three counting rounds on Friday came from Tyler Johnson, Bryce Lewis and Hall—all of whom shot 1-over for the day.

Lewis also finished inside the top 25, finishing 2-over and tying for 25th place. Lewis has finished inside the top 25 in six of Tennessee's seven spring tournaments.
