Tennessee First and Second Varsity Eights Enjoy Successful Start at Big Ten Invitational

SARASOTA, Fla. – Competing in a stacked field with 10 ranked teams, Tennessee rowing enjoyed a successful first day of the Big Ten Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park.

"Our 1V8 managed the day well, and the 2V8 continues to make strides in the right direction," head coach Lisa Glenn said. "We look forward to another good morning of racing tomorrow."
In the first session of the day, the 18th-ranked Lady Vols took on No. 20 Indiana, Dartmouth and Michigan State. UT's first and second varsity eight boats both came away victorious. The 1V8 finished in a time of 6:31.323 to narrowly defeat the top Hoosiers boat, while the 2V8 crossed the finish line in 6:45.705 for its first ranked win of the season.

During the afternoon slate, Tennessee squared off against 12th-ranked Virginia, Iowa and Wisconsin. The Lady Vol 1V8 picked up its second victory over the Cavaliers on the season, finishing first with a 6:34.529 mark. Madelyn Walsh coxed the lineup of Emma Seawright, Natalia Loram, Kathleen Rice, Jaimie Armitage, Reagan Long, Lindsey Morrissett, Sydney Pardy and Erin Gifford to both victories on the day. The varsity eight boat now owns a 15-2 record this season with four ranked wins.

In the 2V8 race, UT defeated Wisconsin and Iowa with a time of 6:52.275 to finish second. The group was coxed by Elizabeth Walley and featured Haley Savastano, Katherine Schildmeyer, Casey Chronister, Riley Ferdelman, Kayla Anderson, Logan Yates, Paige Reymann and Alyssa Biernat.

On Saturday, Tennessee will race against the Hoosiers for the second time on the weekend along with 10th-ranked Duke and Minnesota, beginning at 9:20 a.m.
