Bardwell Sets Tennessee, SEC Championship Records for Lowest Round at 9-under
April 14, 2022 | Women's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Shooting an impressive 9-under par round to pace the Lady Vols, senior Mikayla Bardwell broke the Tennessee program record and SEC Championship record for lowest round during the second day of the SEC Championships at Greystone Golf and Country Club on Thursday.
Bardwell, who now owns the two lowest rounds in relation to par in Lady Vol history, made two pairs of birdies to shoot -4 on the front nine. She caught fire on the back nine, carding birdies on five of her last six holes to conclude the round at 9-under (63). The Lewisville, Texas, native enters the final round of stroke play at 6-under overall and stands in second place, only one shot behind the top spot of the field.
"It was my best ball striking of my career over all 18 holes and I just had to keep telling myself to stop thinking so I didn't get too in my head and let my body swing freely," said Bardwell. "I've been really trying to play fearless golf and it was neat to see it actually happen today."
Freshman Bailey Davis shot +2 and made three birdies during the second round, while sophomore Kayla Holden carded a 78. The pair is tied for 52nd at 9-over ahead of Friday's round.
Vanessa Gilly, a sophomore, shot even par on the back nine to card a 75. She is tied for 42nd at 7-over. Junior Nicole Whiston posted a 78 during the second round and is tied for 66th place.
Tennessee shot 2-over (290) as a team in the second round, which marked a 15-stroke improvement from the first day. Overall, the Lady Vols are tied for 10th place ahead of day three and are two strokes out from being inside the top eight, which advance to match play on Saturday.
