Listen: Center Cooper Mays Joins "The Slice" Podcast
March 23, 2022 | Football
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Junior offensive lineman Cooper Mays joins this week's episode of "The Slice," Tennessee football's official podcast as the Volunteers open spring practice.
"The Slice" is available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify (search The Slice). VFL Films' Kasey Funderburg conducts the in-depth interview, while Travis Dean produces the episode.
Mays returns as the Vols' starting center and helps anchor an offensive line that also returns guards Jerome Carvin and Javontez Spraggins and tackle Darnell Wright. Mays discusses the camaraderie in the offensive line room under the leadership of coach Glen Elarbee.
"It's a very loving atmosphere," Mays said. "There are a lot of great human beings in the o-line group. Nobody is perfect by any means, but there are a lot of people trying to pour their love, blood, sweat and tears into what we are trying to accomplish here."
Mays, a Knoxville native, followed in the footsteps of his father, Kevin, and brother, Cade, in playing college football. All three are Volunteers with Cade currently preparing for the NFL Draft.
"The biggest thing my dad taught us when we were growing up with football was you need be first off the ball when it's snapped. After that, you need to play the hardest out of anyone on the field. If you are playing fast and playing the entire duration of the play the hardest, as a young kid you are going to dominate."
Existing season ticket holders can renew their tickets for the 2022 football campaign now by visiting AllVols.com. Deadline for renewals is May 1. Fans wishing to purchase new season tickets can do so as well at AllVols.com or by contacting the UT Athletic Ticket Office at (865) 946-7000.
