March 02, 2022 | Men's Tennis
Tennessee men's tennis junior Blaise Bicknell is set to represent Jamaica in the 110th edition of the Davis Cup, beginning with the World Group II Playoff first round, a qualifying round running from March 4-5 at the Ace Tennis Club in Athens, Greece.
Established in 1900, the Davis Cup is considered the most prestigious international team event in men's tennis. The annual contest, run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Kosmos Holding, features teams from around the world and is described as the "World Cup of Tennis." The winners of the Davis Cup are recognized as the World Champion team.
"It's a huge honor for anyone to represent their country in Davis Cup," associate head coach James McKie said. "We are really excited for Blaise. He loves playing for Jamaica and I know he's ready to go. We will all be following and watching him compete this weekend."
Bicknell, from Kingston, Jamaica, transferred to UT in the fall, following a two-year stint at Florida. Recording a singles record of 53-6 in those two years, Bicknell logged a 32-0 mark as a sophomore. He was named to the 2021 All-SEC Second Team, NCAA All-Tournament Team and SEC All-Tournament Team following the 2020-21 season.
The twelve winners of this round, played on indoor clay courts, will qualify for the 2022 Davis Cup World Group I, while the twelve losers will qualify for the 2022 Davis Cup World Group II.
Bicknell is the 12th Vol all-time to represent his respective home nation in the Davis Cup, with current head coach Chris Woodruff also on the distinguished list. Listed below is UT's all-time Davis Cup roster:
