Lady Vols Fall Short of #15 Georgia, 4-0
March 19, 2022 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE – Fighting through tough, windy conditions, the 29th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team fell to No. 15 Georgia, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at Barksdale Stadium.
"There are some good things happening with our team, but the reality is, in order for us to beat good teams, every single spot needs to show up," head coach Alison Ojeda said after the match. "The last three matches we have given away a couple of spots. We have got to get tougher."
Georgia (9-2, 5-0 SEC) picked up the doubles point with victories on Court 2 and 3. Tenth-ranked Tenika McGiffin and Daria Kuczer were battling on Court 1, holding a 4-3 lead while on serve, when the point was clinched.
It was a similar story for the Lady Vols (8-5, 2-3 SEC) in singles. Tennessee was finding momentum on Courts 1, 4 and 6 when the match was clinched, but losses at the other three spots resulted in defeat for the Big Orange.
On Court 1, 31st-ranked Rebeka Mertena took the first set over No. 49 Lea Ma of UGA, 7-6(2). The pair fought for every point through the gusty breeze, but Mertena stepped up in the tiebreak. She earned a mini-break in the deciding game and closed it out with attacking play when she was on serve back. At the point of conclusion in the match she trailed, 2-3, in the second set.
Esther Adeshina continued to find success playing her style of tennis. The sophomore pushed ahead early, taking the first set, 6-1. As the match wore on, she and Morgan Coppoc's bout got grittier. The Bulldog took the second stanza, 6-3, and the two were locked at 2-2 in the third set, as play ended.
On Court 6, Eleonora Molinaro only seemed to get better as the match wore on. The Luxembourg native fell in the first set, 4-6, but struck right back with a 6-3 victory in the second. She held a 2-1 advantage when the Bulldogs clinched.
