Chandler Named SEC Tournament MVP; James and Vescovi Receive SEC All-Tournament Team Acclaim
March 13, 2022 | Men's Basketball
After helping lead Tennessee to an SEC Tournament title with three wins in Tampa, three Vols earned All-Tournament honors, the conference announced Sunday.
Freshman guard Kennedy Chandler took home the SEC Tournament MVP award, while Josiah-Jordan James and Santiago Vescovi were named to the SEC All-Tournament Team.
In wins over Mississippi State, Kentucky and Texas A&M, Chandler averaged 14.7 points and 5.0 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from 3-point range (6-for-12) and sporting a 5.0 assists/turnover ratio.
The Memphis native had his best outing during Saturday's semifinal win over Kentucky, scoring a team-high 19 points on 8-for-16 shooting in 34 minutes.
James averaged 14.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game during Tennessee's run, including a 16-point, 10-rebound performance in the SEC Tournament championship game win over Texas A&M.
Vescovi averaged 12.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. The junior had a team-high 17 points and four made threes in the championship game against Texas A&M.
Chandler, James and Vescovi's inclusions on the SEC All-Tournament team mark the fourth, fifth and sixth times during the Rick Barnes era that a Vol has earned the honor—joining Admiral Schofield (2018, 2019), Grant Williams (2019) and Yves Pons (2021).
Chandler is just the second SEC Tournament MVP in program history, joining Allan Houston (1991). He is also the first Vol to make the SEC All-Tournament team as a freshman since Tony White did so in 1984.
