Beck Totals Five Hits as #3 Vols Complete Sweep of Rhode Island
March 13, 2022 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Â Eight different players drove in runs as No. 3 Tennessee completed its third series sweep of the season, downing Rhode Island 12-3 on a sunny but chilly Sunday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Junior outfielder Jordan Beck broke out of his recent hitting slump by going 5-for-5 on the day with five singles and two runs scored.
Trey Lipscomb (three) and Luc Lipcius (two) both drove in multiple runs for the Big Orange while leadoff man Jared Dickey continued his red-hot run with three more hits (two doubles and a triple), an RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman right hander Drew Beam earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the year after tossing a career-high 5.2 innings. Beam gave up three runs on three hits and a pair of walks but also struck out five batters on the day.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Big Orange (15-1) responded immediately with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead. Lipscomb got the Vols on the board with a two-run double before Jorel Ortega followed with an RBI single and Lipcius drove in his first run with a sacrifice fly.
The Rams (0-13) briefly pulled within a run in the fourth inning following a two-run homer by Anthony DePino that just barely cleared the wall in left field.
Following three scoreless innings, Tennessee broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-3 lead. Lipscomb, Evan Russell, Cortland Lawson and Seth Stephenson all drove in runs as UT totaled four hits in the inning. UT added three more runs in the seventh to account for its final three runs.
DePino led Rhode Island at the plate with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Eric Genther also drove in a run for the Rams.
UP NEXT: The Vols play host to Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in their final contest before the start of SEC play next Friday against South Carolina. Tickets for Tuesday's game are available at AllVols.com.
