Nine Vols Invited to NCAA Championships
March 10, 2022 | Swimming & Diving
INDIANAPOLIS – Nine Vols will represent Tennessee men's swimming & diving at the 2022 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, which will be held March 23-26 at McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
Â
UT will look to continue its postseason momentum after finishing second at the SEC Championships last month, which marked the team's best finish since 2001.
Â
The Vols are led by freshman star Jordan Crooks, who qualified for NCAAs in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly. The George Town, Cayman Islands, native exploded onto the national scene last month with his dynamic performance in the 50 free at SECs. Winning gold in the event, his 18.53 time shattered the program record, marked the fastest time ever by a freshman and made him the fifth-fastest person ever in the event. He enters the NCAA Championships with the top time in the country in the event.
Â
Crooks boasts the second-best time in the country in the 100 free heading into NCAAs. His 41.44 time won him the silver medal at SECs, broke the UT program record in the event and stood as the fastest mark ever by a freshman in NCAA history. He capped the conference championships with a bronze medal in the 100 fly while setting the top time in program history in that event as well.
Â
Sophomore Bryden Hattie also qualified for three events for the second straight year. At the NCAA Zone B Championships earlier this week, the Victoria, British Columbia, native posted the No. 2 score overall on the 1-meter and on the platform. He recorded the fourth overall score on the 3-meter to punch his ticket to NCAAs. At the SEC Championships, he won silver on platform and brought home the bronze on the 3-meter.
Â
Senior Matthew Wade rounds out the Vols who earned invites in multiple events, qualifying on both springboards. Last year at NCAAs, he finished sixth overall on the 3-meter and narrowly missed qualifying for the A final on the 1-meter.
Â
Senior Jarel Dillard boasts the sixth-seeded time in the 100 breast entering the meet, after his 51.23 time set the program record in the event and won him a silver medal at the SEC Championships.
Â
Senior Lyubomir Epitropov (200 breast), junior Joel Giraudeau (200 fly), senior Michael Houlie (100 breast), freshman Björn Kammann (100 fly) and sophomore Jacob Reasor (platform) round out the Vols who earned invites to the championships. Senior Brett Champlin is among the top alternates for the event.
