#21 Lady Vols Fall to #6 NC State, 5-2
February 04, 2022 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE – Facing its first top-10 opponent of the season, the 21st-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team fell, 5-2, Friday afternoon to No. 6 NC State in its home opener at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
"It was great to have a season opener in front of this many people, that was fantastic," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "In singles, we didn't feel rushed and pressured every time we were hitting the tennis ball, that's why we were able to compete a little bit better in singles. Ele was outstanding, with how hard we have worked her, and how accepting she has been of it, no surprise she came out start-to-finish and had a stellar performance. Elza won a battle against herself and ultimately defeated her opponent, too, we are proud of that."
The Lady Volunteers (3-2) battled to two singles wins. Eleonora Molinaro took care of business on court 6, downing Amelia Rajecki, 6-3, 6-1, for the first singles victory of the day on all courts. Elza Tomase picked up the second Big orange win. After splitting the first two sets, 6-3, 2-6, Tomase, already leading by a break, found another for the winner against Nell Miller. She took the taking the final stanza, 6-3.
NC State (6-0) put together a strong doubles showing, winning 6-2 on court 1 and 6-1 on court three, taking the doubles point. Sophie Abrams clinched the match for the Wolfpack, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, on court five.
The defeat was the first home loss for the Lady Vols since April 12, 2019.
