Vols Place Third at Puerto Rico Classic; Lewis Finishes Individual Runner-Up

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Bryce Lewis finished as the individual runner-up and the eighth-ranked Tennessee men's golf team finished in third place in its opening tournament of the spring at the Puerto Rico Classic Tuesday.

The Vols shot 15-under for the day on Tuesday—finishing the three-round tournament 47-under as a team.

With his third consecutive sub-70 round, Lewis finished the event tied for second place with a three-round total of 16-under. It marks the best tournament score of his collegiate career and his second highest finish, only behind his individual title at last spring's Country Club of Birmingham Invitational.

Lewis carded a total of 17 birdies over the course of the tournament's three rounds.

Just two strokes behind Lewis was senior Spencer Cross, who finished tied for sixth place—carding a 14-under. Like Lewis, Cross carded three straight rounds in the 60s and finished with the lowest 54-hole score of his career. It marks the ninth top-10 finish of Cross' career and the third in his last six tournaments as a member of the Vols' lineup.

After shooting 2-over in round one on Sunday, Tyler Johnson rebounded to shoot 5-under and 4-under during the next two rounds—finishing tied for 31st after three rounds. Johnson shot no worse than par on any hole Tuesday and carded four birdies. Eight of Johnson's nine rounds as a member of Tennessee's lineup this season have been par or better.

Tennessee's fourth highest finisher, Jake Hall shot three rounds of par or better at the Puerto Rico Classic—including a 4-under 68 on Tuesday. Hall finished tied for 37th place and 6-under overall.

Competing in his first tournament as a Vol, Laurent Desmarchais also shot all three rounds par or better finishing 4-under and tied for 50th place overall.

Competing as an individual, Cade Russell finished tied for 44th place—shooting 5-under for the tournament.

Tennessee is back in action in just under two weeks, traveling to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for the Cabo Collegiate at the Cabo Del Sol Golf Club from Feb. 27 through Feb. 29.
