XC Preview: Hokie Open

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Fresh off its strong showing at the 2022 SEC Championships, the Tennessee men's and women's cross country teams are back in action on Friday in Blacksburg, Virginia, at the Hokie Open.
The men's 6K race begins at 4 p.m. ET, followed by the women's 4K at 4:45 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Vols placed second at the 2022 SEC Cross Country Championships – their best placement since 1999. Dylan Jacobs and Yaseen Abdalla led the way with second and third-place overall finishes to garner First Team All-SEC honors. Karl Thiessen placed 14th in the field to earn second-team accolades.
The women finished sixth as a team at SECs but received strong performances from Kayla Gholar and true freshman Andie-Marie Jones. Gholar crossed the line in 13th en route to claiming Second Team All-SEC recognition. Jones picked up all-freshman honors with her 29th-place finish.
THE LINEUP
Tennessee is traveling a small squad this weekend comprised mostly of runners who did not compete at the conference meet.
The Men: Fuji Anday, Will Cronin, Mike Griffin, Conner Hawkins and Matthew McMillan.
The Women: Allison Buemi, Ainsley Cooper, Jette Davidson, Emma Kate Hamby, Kathleen Maley and Landri Wilcox.
IN THE POLLS
The men's squad is ranked 20th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll entering the weekend. The Vols also sit second in the South Region.
The women's team ranks seventh in the regional standings, moving up two spots following the SEC Championships.
UP NEXT
The Vols and Lady Vols will represent the Orange & White on Friday, Nov. 11 at the NCAA South Regional Championships. The region meet will be held in Huntsville, Alabama, at John Hunt Park.
