Vols in the NFL - Week 12 Update
November 29, 2022 | Football
A crucial catch and a benchmark start and a strong afternoon in the trenches highlight the 12th week of play for former Tennessee Volunteers in the NFL.
While action was plentiful for former Vols throughout the NFL this week, no performance was bigger than San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings'. In a defensive battle between the '9ers and the New Orleans Saints at Levi's Stadium, just once did either side find the end zone. Enter Jennings. With time winding down in the first half and the home side threatening at the five-yard-line, Jennings raced to the back-left corner of the end zone. After quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's pass was tipped by the Saints' cornerback just in front of his face, Jennings adjusted in mid-air to snare the end-over-end ball and land in-bounds for the touchdown with just 13 seconds left on the clock. San Francisco would go on to win, 13-0, and they now sit atop the NFC West standings with a 7-4 record.
On the other side of the country, rookie Cade Mays recorded his first career NFL start, taking the field for the Carolina Panthers in a number of ways. The Knoxville-area VFL saw a few roles for Carolina, including lining up in the backfield in a fullback role. The Panthers would go on to defeat the visiting Denver Broncos, 23-10, inside Bank of America Stadium. With the win, the Panthers now sit just a game-and-a-half back of Tampa Bay for first in the NFC South.
Another strong day came in the form of Jakob Johnson for the Las Vegas Raiders. Though he usually doesn't show up in the box score as a fullback, his impact was critical for the Raiders to pull off the overtime victory against Seattle. He delivered a pair of blocks that resulted in rushing scores for Josh Jacobs, including a lead-block on the 86-yard game winning rush in overtime, and helped Vegas pick up 283 yards on the ground in the game.
