Vols Win NCAA South Region, Qualify for NCAA Championships

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – For the first time since 2002, the Vols cross country team is NCAA South Region Champions – earning an automatic qualifying spot to next week's NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Racing through the rain at the John Hunt Cross Country Course in Huntsville, Alabama, the Vols' top-five finishers all placed inside the top 20 and scored 39 points as a team – 30 less than second-place Ole Miss and 34 fewer than third-place finishing Alabama.
Three Vols placed top 10, led by Yaseen Abdalla in second at 29:28.60. Dylan Jacobs crossed the finish line in third at 29:28.70, while Nate Kawalec placed ninth in 29:45.50.
Karl Thiessen finished 12th overall with a time of 29:55.90 and Eli Nahom placed 19th at 30:14.30.
In addition to its first south region crown since 2002, Tennessee's result qualifies its men's team for the national meet for the first time since 2005.
All five of UT's scoring runners earned all-region honors. Jacob Lewis also received all-region recognition as he placed in the top 25 at 21st overall.
The women started the morning with a fifth-place team finish, scoring 144 points. Kayla Gholar led the Lady Vols as she placed 10th overall in 19:58.50. She garnered all-region honors with her placement. Rachel Sutliff crossed next for UT in 21st – picking all-region accolades – with a time of 20:21.90.
Callie Tucker finished the 6K course in 20:37.70 – placing 30th – while Andie-Marie Jones was 40th at 20:47.10. Brooke Dixon rounded out the group in 45th, crossing the finish line in 20:59.60.
