Jacobs & Abdalla Earn All-America Honors, Vols Place 20th at NCAA XC Championships
November 19, 2022 | Cross Country
STILLWATER, Okla. – Racing at the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the first time since 2005, the Vols placed 20th as a team, while Dylan Jacobs and Yaseen Abdalla brought home All-America honors Saturday morning at Oklahoma State's Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course.
Tennessee's team placement is its best since 1995 and Jacobs' fourth-place finish is the best by a Vol since Doug Brown placed second in 1972.
"We are happy with the day," Head Coach and Director of Cross Country/Distance Sean Carlson said. "You always want a little bit more but we had the highest team finish since 1995 and Dylan Jacobs taking fourth was the highest individual finish here at Tennessee since 1972 in cross country. Three months in, building a team this quickly and being top 20 in the country, we are really excited about the future of Tennessee. We are going to continue to climb that ladder nationally."
Sitting in 10th at 8.93K, Jacobs finished with a massive kick down the home stretch to claim fourth overall at 28:58.0. The Orland Park, Illinois, native garnered All-America accolades with his placement – the third time he has earned cross-country All-America recognition during his career.
Abdalla crossed the finish line second for the Vols in 33rd at 29:29.7. He captured the second cross country All-America honor of his career Saturday, giving the Vols a pair of All-Americans for the first time since Stewart Ellington and Tony Cosey accomplished the feat in 1994.
Jacob Lewis was the third Vol to finish at 30:47.9, placing 176th. Karl Thiessen made his second NCAA Championships appearance – the first Vol to do so since Peter Okwera in 2012 and 2013 – and finished in 181st at 30:51.8
Nate Kawalec closed out UT's top five, placing 217th in a time of 31:19.3.
Tennessee concludes its first season under Carlson with the program's best finish at the NCAA meet in 27 years, its first NCAA South Region title in 20 years and its best conference meet finish in 23 years.
