White Tops Orange in Intrasquad Practice

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After a week of different events both in and out of the pool, White came away victorious against Orange in the annual Tennessee Orange & White instrasquad competition at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.Â

Gui Caribe, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week and Orange squad member, made a massive jump with his time in the 50 free, touching the wall in 19.80 to win the event. The impressive mark was 0.42 seconds faster than his time last week during Tennessee's season-opening win against UNC Wilmington and would rank inside the top 10 in the nation in the event.

White team's Joaquin Vargas posted the fastest times in the 200 free (1:37.68) and 500 free (4:28.07), events he also won against UNCW. The Orange team took the next three spots in the 200 free race led by Will Jackson (1:38.17). On the women's side, White's Brooklyn Douthwright recorded a time of 1:48.85 to win the 200 free, an event she finished second in last year at the SEC Championships. She also came out on top in the 100 free thanks to a 50.89 time. Julia Burroughs from the Orange team finished second in both races.

Kristen Stege from the Orange squad swept the distance freestyle races, winning the 500 free (4:52.65) and 1000 free (9:55.23), shaving off seven seconds and 13 seconds respectively from her times against UNC Wilmington last weekend. In the 500 free, the White team took second, third and fourth, as Kate McCarville led the way with a 4:56.53 mark. McCarville captured the win in the 200 fly behind a 2:03.27 mark.

In the men's 1000 free, Orange's Jack Little saw an eight-second drop from his time in the season opener to win the event with the top time of 9:23.99. Fellow Orange teammate Rafael Ponce de Leon Castilla took second in the event, touching the wall in 9:26.87. Ponce de Leon Castilla also took second in the 500 free.

In addition to McCarville's win in the 200 fly, White team also won both of the men's butterfly events. Luke Brice finished first in the 100 fly (48.68), while Martin Espernberger (1:49.06) and Gus Rothrock (1:51.16) went one and two in the 100 fly. Sara Stotler of the Orange squad earned the victory in the women's 100 fly (54.75).

Mona McSharry of the White Team recorded the top time in the women's 50 free with a time of 23.45. Aleksey Tarasenko took the 100 free race on the men's side, touching the wall in 44.93.

Representing the Orange team, Josephine Fuller swept the backstroke events, posting times of 53.75 in the 100 back and 1:58.08 in the 200 back. Regan Rathwell from the White squad took second in both races, with times of 55.56 and 2:00.13. In the men's event, it was Nick Simons getting the win in the 100 back (48.44) after a Harrison Lierz disqualification. Lierz bounced back in the 200 back, though, as he and Orange teammate Landon Driggers finished first and second, posting times of 1:46.43 and 1:46.54, respectively. Driggers posted the fastest time in the 200 IM (1:49.36).

The breaststroke was dominated by the White team, as McSharry won the 100 breast (1:00.85) to pick up her second individual win of the day and LVFL Tess Cieplucha posted the top time in the 200 breast (2:11.58). CIeplucha also won the 200 IM with a 2:00.27 mark ahead of Fuller's time of 2:04.02. Kailee Morgan for the Orange squad took second. The men's races were swept by Jarel Dillard, touching the wall in 53.46 in the 100 breast and 1:56.03 in the 200 breast.

In the relays, it was the White team's women that came out victorious. In the 400 free relay, the lineup of Douthwright, Emma Carlton, Abby Samansky and McSharry touched the wall first with a 3:23.84 time. In the 200 medley relay, the squad of Rathwell, McSharry, Carlton and Natalie Ungaretti earned the win.

On the men's side, the Orange squad swept the relay races. The lineup of Lierz, Brett Champlin, Micah Chambers and Caribe posted a time of 1:28.87 to win the 200 medley relay. In the 400 free relay, Caribe led things off with a 43.73 split, which was nearly two seconds faster than anyone else in that spot, while Jackson, Chambers and Tarasenko rounded things out to get the win with a 2:58.61 mark.

In diving, Tanesha Lucoe and Grace Cable finished first and second on 3-meter and platform for the Orange squad. Lucoe posted a score of 325.05 on 3-meter and 180.83 on a partial platform list to sweep the events. Cable notched scores of 324.75 and 163.80, respectively. On the men's side, Matthew Wade won the 1-meter event for the Orange team with a 413.40 score, while Bryden Hattie won the platform for the White squad behind a 249.00 mark.

Up next, Tennessee will take on a pair of tough opponents from the ACC in NC State (Oct. 14-15) and Louisville (Oct. 20). The meet against NC State will be UT's home opener for the season.
