Vols in the Pros: Closing Time

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – With the 2022 regular season coming to a close on Wednesday, Oct. 5, former Tennessee Volunteers in pro baseball take a look back on their respective seasons with high ambitions for the coming year.
Blade Tidwell immediately shined in the pros, playing a major role in the St. Lucie Mets Florida State League title where he tossed 9.2 innings in two starts and fanned 13. The first-year pro earned the victory in the championship game, striking out seven batters over five innings and allowing just three hits to Dunedin on Sept. 20.
In the current prospect team-specific prospect rankings, three former Vols rank in the top-10 on their respective clubs charts while nine VFLs are in the top 30.

Will not appear in 2022 season
Yan Gomes – C, Chicago Cubs
Season: 86 G, 277 AB, 23 R, 65 H, 101 TB, 12 2B, 8 HR, 31 RBI, 8 BB, 47 K, .235 AVG, .260 OBP, .365 SLG
Finished the season with a .288 batting average over the final month of the year and had five doubles and two home runs. He hit his 125th big-league homer against Colorado on Sept. 18 and also recorded his 800th career hit in that game. Â
Nick Senzel – CF, Cincinnati Reds
Season: 110 G, 373 AB, 45 R, 86 H, 114 TB, 13 2B, 5 HR, 25 RBI, 30 BB, 76 K, 8 SB, .231 AVG, .296 OBP, .306 SLG
Finished his fourth year in the big leagues, playing the most games in a season during his career with 110. Capped his year with a home run at St. Louis on Sept. 15 and had a multi-hit game in his second-to-last ballgame of the season.

Jordan Beck – OF, Fresno Grizzlies (A COL)
Season: 26 G, 88 AB, 26 H, 42 TB, 7 2B, 3 HR, 19 RBI, .295 AVG, .431 OBP, .477 SLG
Got off to a fast start in his professional career, earning a promotion to Single-A Fresno after just 15 games in rookie ball. In 11 games at Single-A, Beck went .282 at the plate with two home runs and nine driven in. He boasted an impressive .462 on-base percentage with a .487 slugging percentage to finish out his first year in pro ball.
Currently rated the No. 9 prospect in the Rockies' farm system.
Chad Dallas – RHP, Vancouver Canadians (High-A TOR)
Season: 21 App, 21 GS, 1-7, 4.60 ERA, 88 IP, 85 H, 56 R, 45 ER, 51 BB, 86 K, 1.55 WHIP
Finished the year with a strong start in his second-to-last outing, tossing six scoreless innings in a quality start at Spokane.
Ranked the No. 27 prospect in the Blue Jays' farm system.
Zach Daniels – LF, Asheville Tourists (High-A HOU)
Season: 95 G, 358 AB, 76 R, 101 H, 187 TB, 15 2B, 1 3B, 23 HR, 64 RBI, 48 BB, 127 K, 22 SB, .282 AVG, .371 OBP, .522 SLG
Posted massive power numbers over the final two months of the season, crushing 10 home runs, and six doubles over the final 33 game of the year. He had a pair of multi-homer games, one at Aberdeen on Aug. 19 and another at Greenville on Sept. 6. The Georgia native showed off the speed as well in 2022, joining the 20 homer/20 steal club in the home finale against Bowling Green on Sept. 4 where he swiped three bases, mashed a homer and scored three runs in a 16-6 victory for the Tourists.

Max Ferguson – 2B, Greenville Drive (High-A BOS)
Season: 114 G, 416 AB, 95 R, 89 H, 141 TB, 15 2B, 8 3B, 7 HR, 60 RBI, 96 BB, 127 K, 61 SB, .214 AVG, .366 OBP, .339 SLG
Strong in the month of August, securing a .419 on-base percentage. Ferguson swiped a total of 61 bases for the season, good for ninth-most in the entire minor leagues.
Drew Gilbert – OF, FCL Astros Orange (Rookie HOU)
Season: 10 G, 32 AB, 9 R, 10 H, 17 TB, 1 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 BB, 2 K, 6 SB, .313 AVG, .305 OBP, .531 SLG
Started the season very strong before having it cut short due to injury. Gilbert was promoted to Single-A Fayetteville on Aug. 8 after just four days in the Florida Complex League.
Finished the season as the second-best prospect in the Astros' farm system.
Sean Hunley – RHP, Montgomery Biscuits (AA TB)
Season: 28 App, 10 GS, 7-2, 5 HLD, 3.47 ERA, 93.1 IP, 97 H, 37 R, 36 ER, 18 BB, 70 K, 1.23 WHIP
Bumped up to the starting rotation late in the season and thrived in the role, going 4-1 in his last six games. Hunley fired 25.2 innings in August, posting a 3.16 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP for Montgomery, highlighted by a six-inning start against Birmingham (8/30) where he allowed just three hits and struck out one.
Ben Joyce – RHP, Rocket City Trash Pandas (AA LAA)
Season: 13 App, 1-0, 4 HLD, 1 SV, 2.08 ERA, 13 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 20 K, 1.15 WHIP
Burst onto the scene in professional ball, helping lead the Trash Pandas to a regular-season Southern League North title. Joyce immediately took a high-leverage role in the bullpen, notching four holds and a save, using incredible stuff that helped him record 20 strikeouts.
Holds the No. 12 ranking in the Angels' prospect rankings.
Cortland Lawson – INF, Fredericksburg Nationals (A WAS)
Season: 12 G, 42 AB, 6 R, 7 H, 13 TB, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 5 BB, 20 K, 2 SB, .167 AVG, .255 OBP, .310 SLG
Immediately assigned to Single-A Fredericksburg after signing and helped the club to a Carolina League North Division championship.
Jackson Leath – RHP, Down East Wood Ducks (A TEX)
Season: 28 App, 2-4, 1 SV, 8.42 ERA, 31 IP, 31 H, 36 R, 29 ER, 23 BB, 29 K, 1.74 WHIP
Finished the season with three consecutive scoreless outings in the bullpen where he racked up three strikeouts and allowed no batters to reach base.
Andrew Lee – RHP, Harrisburg Senators (AA WAS)
Season: 31 App, 3-2, 3 HLD, 1 SV, 4.15 ERA, 47.2 IP, 41 H, 23 R, 22 ER, 29 BB, 60 K, 1.47 WHIP
Finished the season with a 12.00 strikeouts/9 figure in his last final eight games. In those eight games, he posted six scoreless outings.
Zach Linginfelter – RHP, Rocket City Trash Pandas (AA LAA)
Season: 24 App, 2-1, 4 HLD, 6.54 ERA, 31.2 IP, 28 H, 23 R, 23 ER, 20 BB, 38 K, 1.52 WHIP
Closed the season with a scoreless inning of work at Montgomery on Sept. 10. Won the Southern League North Division regular-season championship with Rocket City.
Andre Lipcius – 2B, Toledo Mud Hens (AAA DET)
Season: 134 G, 462 AB, 70 R, 128 H, 201 TB, 33 2B, 2 3B, 12 HR, 63 RBI, 86 BB, 89 K, 13 SB, .277 AVG, .391 OBP, .435 SLG
Finished the season with impressive numbers after earning a promotion to Triple-A Toledo, boasting a .302/.388/.453 slash-line in 46 games played. Had three homers, 13 doubles and a triple with the Mud Hens, including a two-RBI double in his second-to-last game against Iowa on Sept. 27.
Rated the No. 22 prospect in the Tigers' farm system with an expected MLB call-up date in 2023.
Trey Lipscomb – 3B, Fredericksburg Nationals (A WAS)
Season: 23 G, 97 AB, 15 R, 29 H, 38 TB, 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 13 RBI, 4 BB, 19 K, 12 SB, .299 AVG, .327 OBP, .392 SLG
Assigned to Single-A Fredericksburg on August 9 and made an immediate impact, hitting a three-run home run in his first professional plate appearance and driving in four runs against Augusta. Also notched two different seven-game hit streaks and had a multi-hit game in Game 2 of the Divisional Series against Lynchburg (9/13).

Jorel Ortega – SS, Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (A MIN)
Season: 3 G, 5 AB, 1 H, 1 TB, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 3 K, .200 AVG, .429 OBP, .200 SLG
Had a two-RBI hit in his first game with Single-A Fort Myers at Jupiter on August 9, but was placed on the injured list after the game and did not play the rest of the season.
Connor Pavolony – C, Aberdeen IronBirds (High-A BAL)
Season: 60 G, 173 AB, 26 R, 34 H, 58 TB, 5 2B, 2 3B, 5 HR, 26 RBI, 38 BB, 64 K, .197 AVG, .356 OBP, .335 SLG
Knocked a pair of homers and had a .333 batting average in the final month of the season. Capped his year with a homer in his final regular season game and played in all five of Aberdeen's postseason games in a runner-up finish in the South Atlantic League Championship.
Jake Rucker – 3B, St. Paul Saints (AAA MIN)
Season: 124 G, 450 AB, 69 R, 106 H, 170 TB, 25 2B, 6 3B, 9 HR, 55 RBI, 57 BB, 115 K, 19 SB, .236 AVG, .333 OBP, .378 SLG
Promoted to Triple-A St. Paul following the Midwest League Division Series and shined in his debut, going 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and a pair of runs scores for the Saints.
Holds the No. 30 ranking in the Twins system.
Evan Russell – C, Tri-City Dust Devils (High-A LAA)
Season: 12 G, 36 AB, 5 R, 8 H, 11 TB, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 8 BB, 12 K, 1 SB, .222 AVG, .364 OBP, .306 SLG
After signing with the Angels and starting in the complex league, earned a promotion to High-A Tri-City on August 25 and hit .273 with the Dust Devils, adding a pair of doubles four runs and a stolen base in seven games played.
Andrew Schultz – RHP, Reading Fightin Phils (AA PHI)
Season: 45 App, 0-3, 1 SV, 11 HLD, 4.03 ERA, 44.2 IP, 36 H, 25 R, 20 ER, 34 BB, 62 K, 1.57 WHIP
Earned a promotion to Double-A Reading on August 5 and performed at the elevated level, holding a 2.45 ERA in 14 games played and recording three holds while punching out 14. Held an impressive 12.5 strikeouts/9 in his first season since 2019.
Alerick Soularie – OF, Cedar Rapids Kernels (High-A MIN)
Season: 91 G, 330 AB, 68 R, 75 H, 126 TB, 15 2B, 3 3B, 10 HR, 39 RBI, 48 BB, 106 K, 18 SB, .227 AVG, .334 OBP, .382 SLG
Rounded out the season with a .379 batting average in the month of August, going 11-for-29 at the plate with 12 runs scored, three doubles and a homer. Recorded his 100th career minor league hit against Quad Cities (9/9) when he was in the midst of a seven-game hit streak.
Liam Spence – SS, ACL Cubs (Rookie CHC)
Season: 62 G, 177 AB, 31 R, 34 H, 54 TB, 6 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 29 RBI, 31 BB, 49 K, 3 SB, .192 AVG, .318 OBP, .305 SLG
Promoted to Single-A Myrtle Beach on August 5, lacing three homers, driving in 21 and holding a .333 on-base percentage with the Pelicans.

Season: 26 App, 22 GS, 6-10, 1 CG, 6.28 ERA, 119 IP, 140 H, 90 R, 83 ER, 29 BB, 124 K, 1.42 WHIP
Finished the year with two quality starts in his last three outings, including a 7 inning performance in his final outing of the season where he punched out nine, allowing just three runs and earning the win in a 10-3 contest against Akron (9/16).
Drew Steckenrider – RHP, Tacoma Rainiers (AAA SEA)
Season (MLB): 16 App, 2 SV, 0-2, 5.65 ERA, 14.1 IP, 21 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 5 BB, 10 K, 1.81 WHIP
Season (MiLB): 23 App, 4-0, 2 HLD, 3 SV, 4.62 ERA, 25.1 IP, 29 H, 14 R, 13 ER, 17 BB, 21 K, 1.82 WHIP
Electric in the month of August, posting a 1.13 ERA in eight appearances, recording two saves and striking out nine while allowing just six hits. The spectacular month with Triple-A Tacoma saw the Atlanta native hold opposing hitters to a .194 batting average against.
Seth Stephenson – OF, Lakeland Flying Tigers (A DET)
Season: 10 G, 30 AB, 5 R, 7 H, 7 TB, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 8 K, 9 SB, .233 AVG, .303 OBP, .233
Moved up from the Florida Complex League to Single-A Lakeland on August 17 and immediately made an impact on the bases, swiping seven bases in his first five games, including three steals against St. Lucie on August 19 when he had his first career multi-hit game and scored two runs.
Christin Stewart – SS, Worcester Red Sox (AAA BOS)
Season: 103 G, 338 AB, 55 R, 80 H, 152 TB, 15 2B, 19 HR, 55 RBI, 61 BB, 130 K, 9 SB, .237 AVG, .364 OBP, .450 SLG
Swung a hot stick in August, posting a .517 slugging percentage for the month and blasting a pair of home runs. Stewart also had an OBP of .475 for Triple-A Worcester.

Made one appearance in the complex league before getting the call to go to Single-A St. Lucie and performed masterfully, allowing just two runs in 8.1 innings across four starts. Had a great outing in his final regular season start, going three innings and fanning five and kept it rolling into the postseason where he shined.
In two postseason starts, Tidwell went 9.2 innings and did not allow a run. Striking out 13 hitters and conceding just five hits. Tidwell got the win in the championship game, propelling the Mets to their first Florida State League championship since 2006.

Chase Wallace – RHP, Quad Cities River Bandits (High-A KC)
Season: 26 App, 3-1, 5 HLD, 6.69 ERA, 40.1 IP, 49 H, 34 R, 30 ER, 28 BB, 27 K, 1.91 WHIP
Had a win in both August and September to start each respective month and recorded at least one strikeout per inning in his last four appearances.
Zach Warren – LHP, Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA PHI)
Season: 31 App, 1-0, 4 HLD, 6.35 ERA, 28.1 IP, 27 H, 20 R, 20 ER, 26 BB, 29 K, 1.87 WHIP
Earned the win on August 21 at Buffalo for Lehigh Valley. Finished the season with 20 punchouts at the Triple-A level and did not have a loss during the season for the first time in his professional career.

Rounded out the season with a .379 batting average in the month of August, going 11-for-29 at the plate with 12 runs scored, three doubles and a homer. Recorded his 100th career minor league hit against Quad Cities (9/9) when he was in the midst of a seven-game hit streak.

Finished the year with two quality starts in his last three outings, including a 7 inning performance in his final outing of the season where he punched out nine, allowing just three runs and earning the win in a 10-3 contest against Akron (9/16).

Electric in the month of August, posting a 1.13 ERA in eight appearances, recording two saves and striking out nine while allowing just six hits. The spectacular month with Triple-A Tacoma saw the Atlanta native hold opposing hitters to a .194 batting average against.
Seth Stephenson – OF, Lakeland Flying Tigers (A DET)

Moved up from the Florida Complex League to Single-A Lakeland on August 17 and immediately made an impact on the bases, swiping seven bases in his first five games, including three steals against St. Lucie on August 19 when he had his first career multi-hit game and scored two runs.
Christin Stewart – SS, Worcester Red Sox (AAA BOS)
Season: 103 G, 338 AB, 55 R, 80 H, 152 TB, 15 2B, 19 HR, 55 RBI, 61 BB, 130 K, 9 SB, .237 AVG, .364 OBP, .450 SLG
Swung a hot stick in August, posting a .517 slugging percentage for the month and blasting a pair of home runs. Stewart also had an OBP of .475 for Triple-A Worcester.
Blade Tidwell – RHP, St. Lucie Mets (A NYM)
Season: 5 App, 5 GS, 0-1, 1.93 ERA, 9.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 BB, 11 K, 1.20 WHIP
Made one appearance in the complex league before getting the call to go to Single-A St. Lucie and performed masterfully, allowing just two runs in 8.1 innings across four starts. Had a great outing in his final regular season start, going three innings and fanning five and kept it rolling into the postseason where he shined.
In two postseason starts, Tidwell went 9.2 innings and did not allow a run. Striking out 13 hitters and conceding just five hits. Tidwell got the win in the championship game, propelling the Mets to their first Florida State League championship since 2006.

Chase Wallace – RHP, Quad Cities River Bandits (High-A KC)

Had a win in both August and September to start each respective month and recorded at least one strikeout per inning in his last four appearances.
Zach Warren – LHP, Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA PHI)

Earned the win on August 21 at Buffalo for Lehigh Valley. Finished the season with 20 punchouts at the Triple-A level and did not have a loss during the season for the first time in his professional career.
