XC Preview: 2022 SEC Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete at the SEC Cross Country Championships in Oxford, Mississippi, on Friday. The meet begins at 11:08 a.m. ET with the women's 6K, followed by the men's 8K at 11:50 a.m.
The race will be held at the Ole Miss Golf Course and marks the fourth time the SEC Championships have been run in Oxford. The 1996 and 2009 versions were also held at the golf course.
The championships will be televised on SEC Network – coverage begins at 11 a.m. – with a streaming link available here. Official timing results are provided by Delta Timing and can be accessed by following this link.
John Anderson (play-by-play) and Larry Rawson (analysis) will be on the call Friday morning. The television window runs until 12:30 p.m., and then the awards ceremony will stream on SECN+.
The men's squad enters the championships at No. 17 – the highest-ranked SEC team – in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll. They are led by first-year head coach Sean Carlson and also rank first in the South Region.
Yaseen Abdalla, Canaan Anderson, Riley Buchholz, Will Cronin, Conner Hawkins, Dylan Jacobs, Nate Kawalec, Jacob Lewis, Eli Nahom and Karl Thiessen make up the 10 men representing the Orange & White.
Abdalla, Jacobs, Kawalec and Lewis will be making their SEC Championship debuts but carry vast experience into the race. Jacobs is the reigning 10K national champion and placed 10th at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships. He is also a three-time cross-country All-American.
Abdalla was a member of the Texas distance medley relay group that won the national title at Indoor NCAAs in March. He also took home the Indoor 5000m Big 12 conference championship last season and placed 32nd at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2021 – garnering All-America honors.
Lewis won the WAC championship in the mile last season, while Kawalec placed fourth at the 2022 ACC Outdoor Championships in the 5000m and was 19th at the NCAA Southeast Region Cross Country Championship in 2021.
Thiessen led the Vols last year at SECs, finishing 14th and earning All-SEC honors.
For the women, Msgana Araya, Allison Buemi, Brooke Dixon, Kayla Gholar, Emma Kate Hamby, Andie-Marie Jones, Kathleen Maley, Erin Spreen, Rachel Sutliff and Callie Tucker will represent the Lady Vols.
Gholar placed 40th for the women in 2021, while Tucker finished 47th. Dixon and Sutliff also ran a year ago, finishing 51st and 56th. Sutliff earned Freshman All-SEC honors with her performance.
Maley did not compete at SECs last season but did run for UT at the conference meet in 2019. Araya, Buemi, Hamby, Jones and Spreen will all make their SEC Championships debut on Friday.
