Charisma Taylor Breaks Women’s Triple Jump School Record
January 29, 2022 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C. – For the second day in a row, Charisma Taylor broke a Lady Vol indoor school record as she leaped 13.90m in the women's triple jump Saturday at the Bob Pollock Meet.
Taylor opened her season in the triple jump Saturday and broke the school record on her first attempt, going 13.80m. She improved the mark to 13.90m on her fifth jump.
The Nassau, Bahamas, native eclipsed the previous school record of 13.54m set by LaChyna Roe in 2019.
Her mark currently ranks sixth in the world and third in the NCAA.
"We've had a great opportunity with adding Charisma into our team and into our fold," director of track & field/cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "She's a graduate student. She's in the MBA program here. She's just an outstanding first-class young person. Charisma is a perfect example of coming in and being open to being coached and being passionate about what she's doing. We've just been able to click with her and she's been able to click with us. Charisma and the coaches have done an outstanding job."
THROWERS PICK UP TWO SHOT PUT WINS
Latavia Maines and Jordan West continued Tennessee's strong weekend in the ring as they won the women's and men's shot put competition, respectively.
On her fifth throw, Maines heaved the shot 16.44m, which proved to be enough for the win. West's best and winning throw of the day came on his third attempt, a toss of 19.06m.
The shot put wins gave UT three total event titles at the Bob Pollock meet after Georgios Korakidis won the men's weight throw on Friday.
BYNUM, PENN, SEYMOUR & VICKERS CRACK TOP-10 LISTS
Emmanuel Bynum ran in the men's 200-meter Saturday afternoon, clocking a time of 20.73. His time is a personal best and places him seventh all-time on the Vols' indoor top-10 list. Bynum finished third overall in the event.
In the 3,000-meter, Sydney Seymour ran a personal best of 9:15.00 and placed fourth overall. Seymour's time moves her to fifth on the women's indoor top-10 list for the 3,000.
Along with Taylor's school record in the triple jump, Kala Penn and Mikele Vickers also leaped into the women's indoor triple jump top-10 list. Penn's top mark of 13.02m makes her fourth all-time in the Lady Vols' indoor triple jump top-10, while Vickers set a personal best at 12.51m.
Her mark is good for 10th in Lady Vol history in the indoor triple jump.

FINAL THOUGHT FROM ALFORD-SULLIVAN
"Our team this whole weekend really competed hard," Alford-Sullivan said. "We opened up a lot of new people, including Favour Ashe and Carey McLeod. I am very, very pleased. We go into a big training cycle and will compete in small groups next week. We need the training, we need the time for recovery and then setting up for the rest of the season and into championship time. I am proud of my coaches and I am proud of the team. We are looking forward to the next phase."
UP NEXT
The Vols and Lady Vols will split next weekend as they send groups to Virginia Tech and Notre Dame. Virginia Tech's Doc Hale Elite Meet and Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational both run Friday and Saturday, February 4-5.
