January 22, 2022 | Track & Field
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Tennessee track & field's jumpers and throwers shined on the final day of the Hokie Invitational Saturday as the two groups combined for five personal bests and a pair of event wins.
On her final throw of the day, Latavia Maines heaved the shot put 17.08m (56.5) to surpass Maria Deaviz of Virginia to claim the women's shot put event title. A three-time SEC champion in women's shot put, Saturday marked Maines' 2022 season debut.
Over at the long jump, Anthony Riley set an indoor personal-best with a jump of 7.65m (25-1.25). Riley won the men's long jump competition and narrowly missed eclipsing his outdoor long jump PR of 7.66m (25-1.75).
"I feel really, really good after this weekend," director of track & field/cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "We took this weekend off with our male sprinters and some of our other sprint focus kids, but other than that, man, we're firing on all cylinders. FINAL THOUGHT FROM ALFORD-SULLIVAN
"You saw it with Anthony and Latavia today, our kids are competing. It is great to see. People are putting it down on the final lap. People are kicking it in for a win. It's really been fun. We have a whole new element of school coming back and we have to get back to work academically, but I think this group is very well focused and very excited. I am proud of my coaching staff, proud of my athletes. We'll continue to press on and get through next weekend as we had to Clemson."
