USA, Reynolds Fall In Semifinals In Montreal
September 05, 2021 | Women's Basketball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The USA advanced unbeaten into the semifinal round of the 2021 FIBA 3x3 Women's Basketball Series Montreal stop before falling to Austria, 17-15, in Canada over the weekend.
The USA, which finished the event 3-1, came up short in the semifinals vs. the Austrians after beating that same team 15-14 in the preliminary round. LVFL Jordan Reynolds of Portland, Ore., was part of the American contingent for the second time this summer.
The semifinal contest was close for the first three minutes, and the USA trailed Austria 5-4 when Hailey Van Lith (Louisville/Wenatchee, Wash.) scored with 6:54 to go. Austria, however, opened up a 9-4 lead with four straight points. The USA got buckets from Reynolds, Breanna Richardson (Mississippi State/Conyers, Ga.) and Camille Zimmerman (Columbia/Mesa, Ariz.) to help keep Austria from pulling away, and it was 12-8 in Austria's favor at the 2:49 mark.
That four-point margin remained over the next 1:35, and it was 16-12 with 1:14 on the clock. Van Lith made a 2-pointer with 35.1 seconds remaining that cut it to 16-14 and gave the USA some hope, but time ran out on the USA's comeback attempt, and each team scored once more to reach the 17-15 final. Richardson had eight points, and Van Lith added five points and six rebounds.
The USA, which got out-rebounded 21-17, shot just 44.0 percent from inside the arc (11 of 25 on 1-point field goals) and 14.3 percent from behind the line (1 of 7 on 2-point field goals).
The USA is hoping to earn an invitation to the 2021 FIBA 3x3 Women's Series Final that will be played on Sept. 18-19 in Bucharest. The host nation of Romania and the top seven teams in the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series season standings will earn a berth in that event.
USA teams also participated in the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series Constanta (Romania) stop that was played Aug. 14-15 and won the Klaipeda (Lithuania) stop that was contested July 30-31. Reynolds played in Constanta, while another LVFL, Cierra Burdick, was part of the victorious effort in Klaipeda.
In earlier preliminary round action in Montreal, the USA opened with an 18-16 overtime win over Germany before earning a 15-14 victory over Austria and edging the Netherlands, 16-14.
Van Lith paced the USA in its three preliminary-round victories with 18 points, which tied as the top output on the day, and had four key assists and eight rebounds; Richardson scored 13 points and grabbed 17 boards; Reynolds had 12 points and 11 rebounds; and Zimmerman contributed six points and nine boards.
